The ranchos look out into the garden, and have fans and a large safe box. They all share a spacious with well-equipped communal kitchen, and sleep up to 4 people.
The two cabinas with private bathroom are equipped with 1 double bed, 1 single bed, air conditioner, ceiling fan, and safe box. They share one kitchen which looks out into the garden and jungle.
You will start surfing in Malpais, then go to Playa Carmen to surf the beach break, then further go to north in Playa Santa Teresa where you'll find a point break with more stronger waves. Still further north, you will find Playa Hermosa which is easy for beginners and Manzanillo with a reef break for the very experienced surfer.
If you want to learn how to surf, there is no better place to go than the Mal Pais Surf Camp. The team of surf instructors will teach you surf etiquette and the art of surfing in a fun way and you will meet fellow surfers in the hotel to exchange experiences while having a cold beer. This surf camp will take place in Malpais, Cost Rica, just minutes away from the top surf spots of Santa Teresa and Malpais.
The small beach community of Malpais sits next to the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. Malpais is in tranquil and undisturbed surroundings. The beaches of Malpais are great scenic beauty with small coves, tide pools, and lonesome stretches of coastline. On its northern end, on Playa Carmen, Malpais joins the thriving surf town of Santa Teresa where you'll find some of the best surf beaches of Costa Rica.
Santa Teresa is just across the road intersection, around 200 meters from the Mal Pais Surf Camp. In Santa Teresa you will find banks, supermarkets, car, and ATV rentals along with a multitude of bars, restaurants, and surf shops. Santa Teresa has grown quickly in recent years and the buzzy lifestyle of the surf town is attractive.
This surf camp includes 3 daily meals (limited menu).
You can book your flight to San Jose International Airport (SJC). You can fly with one of Costa Rica’s national carriers, Sansa or Nature Air. From San Jose International Airport (SJC), fly directly to Tambor Airport (TMU) then take a taxi for the 40-minute ride to Malpais.
Mal Pais Surf Camp can pick you up at your hotel in San Jose or Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). The price for the transportation is 50 USD per person, or 95 USD for transportation and 1 night in a hotel near the airport.
In addition, you can drive from San Jose International Airport (SJC) to Puntarenas (approximately 2 hours) then board the car to ferry to Paquera (approximately 70 minutes). Once in Paquera, drive approximately 1 - 1.5 hours to Malpais on a good to fair road with signs. In Playa Carmen or Santa Teresa, turn left and continue for 200 meters until the Mal Pais Surf Camp entrance.
Adventurous and budget traveler can take the direct bus from San Jose to Malpais. The price is very reasonable but a bit hassle. The buses take 5.5 hours to Malpais and leave San Jose at 6 a.m. and 2 p.m.
