La Barra Surf Camp Nicaragua Program

Nicaragua surf spots

Remote, uncrowded surf is what you will find when surfing in Central Nicaragua. This region of Nicaragua is by far the most under-utilized and hard-to-reach surf in the country; boat access is necessary to get to the good stuff. Adventure Sports Tours (AST) offers two super pangas at your disposal with the exception of day of arrival and departure. They do not charge for our boat trips, as it is part of your surf tour package when traveling with AST in Central Nicaragua.

Nicaragua is the largest country in Central Americas and borders Honduras and Costa Rica. The civil war is over so you don’t need to worry about any problems with violence in Nicaragua, it is one of safest countries in Central America and you will see when you meet the locals. The currency is the Cordova. You get about 24 to 27 per USD so you can be a big spender in Nicaragua, but make sure you don’t bring any bills that have cuts or tears, they will not accept these in any stores or markets.

Everything is far away so you will be driving to get to places, make sure you bring plenty of bottled water on your day trips. Average drive time to and from most places is one to two hours, but you can stop along the way. All major banks are located in major cities, so if you need to use an ATM, be sure to do so in Managua, Chinandega, Leon, Granada, Rivas, or San Juan Del Sur.

Best to practice up on your Spanish if you want to get directions or speak with the locals as most part of Nicaragua is non English speaking country. You will find educated people in the major cities that speak English, but for the most part you will enjoy learning while visiting Nicaragua.

Free of charge, you can take a Nicaraguan cooking class from the cooks, they will be more than happy to teach you some of your favorite meals while staying at La Barra Surf. If you like, they can teach you to make Pupusas, a typical Salvadorian dish.

Deep sea fishing

La Barra offer fishing with their surf boats. This is a four hour trip up and down the central coast of Nicaragua. You can expect to catch sierra, snapper, snook, dorado, tuna, and they will provide all the gear, gas, and boat. Fishing can be added on your trip anytime or prearranged at time of booking your surf vacation. Best time to fish in Nicaragua is morning and evening. La Barra can also get you into the estuaries if you want to fly fish, but you will need to bring your own equipment.

Meat grinders or the boom

La Barra offer day trips to breaks that are not in their immediate area, but close enough for you to taste. Meat grinders is available by boat, just a short one hour ride down south, and you’re in the water early. This is a tide sensitive wave so the trips are based on swell and tide at an additional cost.

The boom, two hours up north of La Barra, offers some of the sickest beach break, but you have to jump on it early as the winds can ruin your day trip up there. This is a great place to shoot photos and get into some punch beach break and score a few tubes while you’re there.

La Barra, partnered with Soma Surf Resort, can arrange combo trip to the south and central region of Nicaragua. Surf the outer reef of Popoyo, take a boat trip to lances left and enjoy some high end stylish accommodations and food at Soma Surf Resort. All transfers are provided by La Barra Surf Camp and Soma Surf Resort, so you just sit and enjoy the ride down.
