The Turks and Caicos Islands is a small British Overseas Territory found between the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic. The country is made up of six main inhabited islands and many smaller islands and cays. Providenciales, also known as Provo is 37.5 square miles, making it the fourth-largest in landmass and the northwestern-most island in the Turks and Caicos archipelago; by far the most populated, most developed, and the center of tourism. The ambiance of the Turks and Caicos Islands is laid back, friendly, and is the safest island in the Caribbean!

The islands were a dependency of the Bahamas until 1874 when control was assumed by the Jamaican government. In 1962, they became a British Commonwealth Colony. Today, the islands are self-governing with British diplomatic representation provided by a resident governor. The seat of government and the governor’s mansion are based in the country’s capital, Grand Turk.

The Turks and Caicos Islands has a hot and dry tropical climate, usually getting between 500 to 600 millimeters of rain a year. With approximately 46 days of rainfall per year, the islands are considered arid.

The rainy season is short and insignificant, from October to December; that is when the rainfall is at its peak with an estimated six days of rain each month. During the dry season, from January to October, there are usually only two days of rain per month. Constant sunshine and warm weather make this a paradise for kiteboarding vacations for the entire family!

Long Bay Kite Beach is one of the most renowned kiteboarding beaches in the Caribbean. On Providenciales, Long Bay kite beach is where the kiteboarding action and lessons take place. Long Bay is an ideal beach for both novice and advanced kiteboarders. Three miles of sandy beach, warm turquoise flat water, and steady winds ten months of the year make Long Bay Beach a kiteboarding paradise.

What you won’t find on Long Bay’s Kite Beach are rocks, gusty winds, currents, sea urchins, and obstacles. The flat water eliminates shore break, making the water very easy to access. Hop on your board and burn through the miles of shallow flat water or stand in waist-deep water while learning the exciting sport of kiteboarding!

Things to do (optional)

If you want to continue your kiteboarding education during a light wind day, Kite Provo will be happy to spend time with you going over all of the important non-flying aspects of the sport. They can instruct you on wind directions and safety, kite set-up, and the basics of launching and landing a kite, as well as self- rescue. You’ll be surprised with just how much you can learn in light wind conditions. If you wish to spend your day doing something a little more active, here is a host of amazing activities available that will wow everyone.

Mangrove Island National Marine Park Eco Tour

A magical journey through the shallow water estuaries of the national park system. This is more about “Connecting You with Nature!” as you will paddle through a maritime forest with mangrove forests lining the canals, it not only blocks the winds but makes the water crystal clear and provides a natural nursery for so much wildlife!

A must-do activity while in the Turks and Caicos Islands; a very unique experience and a great way to experience the natural beauty. If you have not been on one of the eco-adventures, you are recommended to start with this tour as it offers amazing diversity and is the easiest tour so it is suited for all skill levels; 90% of this tour is in knee-deep waters.

Chalk Sound Eco Tour

Chalk sound is one of the country's most pristine nature preserve. It sits on the south side of the island and is often rated as the most scenic place on the island. The color of the water in the natural sound is a florescent turquoise blue surrounded by natural iron. The middle of the sound is full of small islands that appear to be floating above the water as the erosion of the iron shore rock formations has created space between the water and the islands.

Your eco guide will take you to these islands, one of which is full of iguanas; you will stop and see the dense population of these curious reptiles. This tour is best suited for more experienced paddlers due to the open water paddling but the amazing waters and islands make it a must-see for your list!

Sunset Happy Hour Paddle Tours

These tours are the perfect way to transition from the day into the evening! The heat of the day has passed and now it is time to relax. Join the Sunset Happy Hour to celebrate the onset of the evening. Go to Sunset Beach to watch the sun melt into the ocean and enjoy a paddle on a paddleboard or tandem kayak!

The stunning sunsets are magical on the water, be sure to bring your cameras for breathtaking photos. Start with a glass of Prosecco wine and then take a leisure paddle along the shoreline overlooking the entire island and Grace Bay to enjoy the sunset! Very easy paddle and suitable for beginners!

Private snorkeling and cruising tour: Caicos Catalyst

Caicos Catalyst is a small family-owned private boat charter company; Captains Mathew and Morgan were born and raised in the Turks and Caicos. Allow yourself to fully decompress, enjoy all that the islands have to offer. Caicos Catalyst also provides Kiteboarding Safaris and private kite lessons. With kiteboarding quickly growing (and with avid kiters as captains!), let Catalyst crew take you to the hidden backcountry kiteboarding heavens with an instructor or guide from KiteProvo.

Scuba diving: Dive Provo

Driving directions from the airport

  • Take Leeward Highway away from the airport, East – you will drive about 15 minutes
  • Look for the Rubis gas station on the right and the Kia car center on the left (chain link fenced in parking lot full of Kia rental cars)
  • This is the last roundabout on Leeward Highway
  • This is the roundabout where Leeward Highway goes from a four-lane divided highway to a two-lane road – if you are using Google Maps, this road is named Allegro
  • However, there is NO road sign name marking the road
  • Continue through the roundabout going straight - do not turn at the roundabout
  • About .5 miles from the roundabout is your left hand turn
  • Turn left on Garden Loop Road
  • The road sign is sometimes temporarily down, but the turn is a left hand turn just before the new Long Bay Express Gas Station
  • If you pass the gas station, you just missed it
  • Garden Loop is a big loop and if followed all the way around would just place you back on Leeward Highway
  • Follow the loop and the home is located in the corner
  • The house is blue in color and in the corner of the big loop
  • The house is clearly marked no. 42 on the stone wall in front of the driveway on both sides
