The Resort, located directly in front of world-class wave Lance’s Left, is made up of three luxury beachfront bungalows all handmade by Mentawai craftsmen.
Set against a lush jungle backdrop, each private bungalow is positioned on the palm-fringed white sand beachfront with panoramic views of the spectacular wave Lances Left. You can literally step from your bungalow terrace onto the sand and into the ocean within seconds. The design of the bungalows combines the best of the local look and feel with the rigor and comfort that most Western travelers enjoy. The result is an elegant yet strikingly exotic experience.
The bungalows, designed for breathtaking views of the bay and wave, each has a big spacious terrace with comfortable lay back chairs that induce dozing off to the sound of the ocean and birds of the jungle. Maximum privacy is assured thanks to the natural landscape and property design. A fully furnished living room area inside the bungalow creates a homely feel.
Each private bungalow can accommodate up to four people. At any one time, there will only ever be a maximum of ten guests at the resort. The maximum guest limit allows them to take care in guaranteeing each guest a luxurious and comfortable stay. The private experience also ensures that the surf never gets too crowded. Booking the whole resort to enjoy between yourself and some friends is an option they often accommodate.

Kingfisher Mentawai offers surf lessons for complete beginners, available daily with their on-site surf coach. Head down to the beach break every morning with a soft-top surfboard, your sunscreen, and wax for a day of ocean fun! Feeling comfortable on the surfboard? Head over to mini Ht’s and join the long-boarders in the lineup for a sunset surf session. As a top surfers destination, the Mentawai Islands offer ideal settings for beginners.
Waves Perfect For Beginners
Lance's Left
Literally on your doorstep! Located directly in front of the resort and a stone's throw away from your private beachfront bungalow.
Perfect for all levels and a goofy foot's dream. A breathtaking long left-hand reef break famous for its year-round consistency offers “leg burners” on perfectly shaped open faces. With several different take-off spots, riders of all levels are able to choose their perfect wave. Expect beautifully lined walls rolling down the reef with two fun barrel sections. Hone your turns, get comfortable in the barrel or push your limits.
The cherry on top? Their aluminum small boat is on standby all day so that after each wave you get taken straight back into the lineup!
Bintangs
Bintangs, a great wave for all levels of surfers is a short 5-minute speedboat ride away. The short right-hander offers up the most fun slab barrels in the Mentawais. Swell moves in from the deep ocean and unexpectedly jacks up into a thrilling horseshoe barrel as it bends back on itself. On smaller days it is super fun and rippable for everyone to enjoy. No need to wear your booties, the reef at Bintangs is deep making it suitable for even beginner surfers. The wave is situated across the bay, so from the comfort of your bungalow, you will know when it turns offshore as you see the spray come off the back of the waves.
Season
The Mentawai Island Archipelago is hands down the most consistent surf region in the world! Perfect, tropical blue waves can be surfed at any time of the year, resulting in a surf destination that is unmatched anywhere else on the globe.
There is no “off season”, only a change in the size of waves you can expect to be surfing. Below is an overview of the size and type of waves you can expect throughout the year as surfing conditions are always in a state of constant flux, changing according to the wind, tide, swell size, and direction. Kingfisher Mentawai team is extremely well acquainted with the changing conditions and knows exactly which breaks work best at any given time.
January - February (Early Season)
One of the best-kept secrets in the Mentawais! The islands in West Sumatra are so famed for the big swells during the middle of the year that the smaller months never get the attention they so deserve, and it’s because of this reason that there are only a handful of local expats that truly know what the waves are like during the early season period. Those that are ‘in the know’ have for years been surfing perfect more mellow waves with not a soul in sight!
During this season the waves generally range between 2-4 feet, with the odd bigger swell filling in every now and again. They surf a variety of the surrounding waves during this time of year, the sandbanks at the beach break are particularly well-shaped and reef breaks such as the Point, Lances Left, Monkeys, and Bintangs are all fun options. If you are looking for friendly waves, this is the time for you. Very light winds create endlessly glassy days that end with breathtaking sunsets. This is a beautiful time of year for families, couples, or groups wanting more than just crazy standup barrels! Empty line-ups, crystal clear fun waves, and plenty of calm days for snorkeling!
March-October (Peak Season)
Considered prime months for what the Mentawai's are famous for - amongst surfers, the media, and photographers alike - this time of the year sees a great mix of both medium and big-sized ground swells for those seeking a shoulder to double overhead waves.
By March, the Indian Ocean has really kicked into gear and you can expect waves suitable for those looking for a bit of everything. From perfect peeling waves, fun point breaks to big stand-up barrels.
The biggest swells travel over thousands of kilometers from the deep Indian Ocean to eventually arrive at the shores, so perfectly groomed to unravel over the islands exotic reef system, resulting in natural wonder as you witness the most perfect waves on the planet.
Surfers favoring extreme barrels at both Lances Right and Lances Left should visit during the months of June, July, and August. The waves throughout the entire peak season are extraordinarily consistent. With long period swells, add offshore winds and the conditions are as good as it gets!
November-December (Late Season)
You will find waves in the 3-5 foot range. The swells are slightly less consistent than the peak season, nonetheless, there are still plenty of waves with fewer surfers in the lineup.
Both the late and early seasons are a great time for guests to enjoy all the additional activities in addition to surfing. Suitable months for both beginners, intermediate and advanced surfers as there is a mix of small and bigger swells during these months.

SUPs and Foiling
At Kingfisher, they have 2 SUPs and a foil board the guests are welcome to use. Get some exercise on the SUPs on the small days or just go for a mellow cruise through the beautiful mangroves. If you are feeling up for it, give the foil board a go. It is easier than it looks, and their guides will give you a helping hand along the way.
Trekking and Biking
Kingfisher Resort is situated on Sipora island, home to various wild jungle tracks. Go for a trek through the lush Mentawai greenery or take a bike ride and go discover your own private beach. A jungle trek will take you through the local villages, the closest one is about 5 kilometers from the resort. There you can immerse yourself in a completely unique culture, or test your skills in the volleyball court - the local kids are always keen on a game.

Getting to Kingfisher involves taking a ferry from Padang (PDG) to Tua Pejat, where the resort speedboat will pick you up and take you to Kingfisher. All of this will be pre-arranged by Kingfisher Mentawai for your convenience and is included in the package price.
