The surf schools teaches a wide variety of people, of all ages. A typical lesson might include young children whose parents want them to learn in a safe and closely supervised way, teenage boys or girls who want to become surfers as quickly as possible or young to middle aged tourists, on vacation, who want a fun activity. They have successfully taught people from 7 to 60 years old to stand on the surf board!

Everything possible is done so you will stand up on your first lesson! However, surfing is a journey and, like most of life's challenges, to surf well, you need time, practice and guidance. It depends on your strength, flexibility, co-ordination and of course your dedication!

We get nearly every able bodied person to their feet in their first lesson. We recommend at least a package of three, in close succession, to get the very basic technique and safety concepts. A package of five will give you better understanding of how to read the ocean. Of course, all surfing packages should be followed up if you are not getting to the beach frequently. Private surf lessons are ideal for people wanting to take it to the next step catching great waves and executing cool maneuvers.

Nosara has the best of both worlds: it is a quaint beach community off the beaten track with all of the necessary conveniences: Wi-Fi, shops and restaurants abound but can also be easily ignored if you choose to escape. The natural flora and fauna are so abundant in this region alongside the ocean that many people instantly feel a strong connection to nature and themselves. Youll likely see our resident Howler monkeys, iguanas, coatimundis, raccoons and hummingbirds, all on our property at KayaSol. At the beach you might see turtles (especially if you go to Ostional, but occasionally on Guiones, as well), pelicans, plenty of fish, crabs, and on a river tour, you might see crocodiles, caymans, flamingos, and herons.

Great surf, long sandy beaches, diverse wildlife, wonderful people and the freedom of a laid back lifestyle allow people to find what it is that they came down searching for. It is most common for our visitors to immediately start daydreaming about how they can live down here as well!

In the water

Walking along any of the beaches, or from one to the next for a longer hike, is an enlightening experience of which you will find yourself alone much of the time. Walking all the way to the southern tip of Guiones point at low tide, you will find a mystical pink sand beach and pink sand island! You can swim in the cove at Pelada beach to the north. Snorkeling is another option and there are several areas accessible by boat or on foot that are suitable at the right tide. Here in Guiones you can learn to surf or hone your expertise. Boogie boarding, aka body boarding is another option for those that want to get a taste of the ocean's power but don't feel the need to complicate things by trying to stand up. If flat water is more your thing, there are canoe, kayak and boat trips to see wildlife on the Nosara river. SUP or stand up paddling has recently been introduced to Nosara with several outfitters available to guide you either on the river, in the ocean or both.

On land

Horse rides along the beach at sunset or on a full moon is a favorite as well as ATV tours of the beautiful Guanacaste mountains and their magnificent ocean views. The longest zipline canopy tour in Costa Rica is also located here in Nosara. Being in the presence of our resident Howler Monkey's is an enchanting part of Nosara. You will hear them most mornings as the jungle awakens with the sun and often times you will see them right outside your window. Some days they spend as much as an hour in the trees in the back section of our hotel. There is also a monkey rescue facility for injured monkeys that you can visit for a closer interaction. The famous Nosara Yoga institute is located at the southern inland end of Guiones which is about a 15-20 minute beach/jungle walk. There are also yoga classes offered at Tica Massage (also offers pilates, personal training, kettle bells and a gyrotonic machine), the Yoga House and at the Harmony hotel.

Nightlife

For the early evening from 19:00 - 22:00, Guiones beach offers live music at one hotel or another most nights of the week. There are several local bands that tend towards classic rock repertoire and a variety of visiting artist among the groups. Since a lot of the people in Guiones are here to surf, the Guiones beach area businesses have amicably agreed on a 10 pm quiet hour. KayaSol has live entertainment at a modest volume from 19:00 - 22:00 one to two nights a week depending on the season but always on thursday. On Friday and Saturday nights after 22:00, the infamous "Tropi" Tropicana disco bar in Nosara central is the place to be for the night time excitement. A Costa Rican discotheque is truly an unforgettable experience and hosts the most talented local dancers. Dancing salsa, cumbia and merengue is as natural to the local Costa Ricans as speaking Spanish. It is a beautiful tradition passed along generation after generation and if you are lucky, you might learn a few moves from some willing teachers!

Kaya Sol Surf Hotel is conveniently located near the massage and spa center, Espacio Day Spa.

Driving directions from Liberia

From Liberia, our hotel is approximately 2.5 hours.

Out of the Liberia Airport, take a right and follow the signs to Nicoya on this road for about 50 km.

Take a right turn at the intersection with a 4-way red flashing light, which will take you into Nicoya. Go straight through town without turning, and continue southward on the main paved road for approximately 30 kilometers (following the signs to Samara and Nosara).

Almost before you get to the entrance that takes you to Nosara there is a gas station on the left side. Just past the gas station, the highway curves sharply left. At the apex of the curve, turn right, heading downhill, onto a small dirt road which leads to Nosara.

Continue to follow the signs to Nosara. It will take you about 45 minutes to an hour to get there. The road twists and turns going through several small towns and villages. Stay always on the main road.

Turn right at the T-intersection in Barco Quebrado in order to stay on the main road. It will be marked with many advertisements to Nosara. You will see the ocean for the first time in the small fishing village of Garza. We are only 15 minutes further!

Arrival to Nosara (Playa Guiones) will be made obvious by signs, surf shops, restaurants, hotels, and so forth. There are 3 main roads to the beach in Playa Guiones. Coconut Harrys and National Rental Car are on the first road. Giardino Tropical marks the second road. You will see signs here to KayaSol which you may follow. If you miss this road you may also take the last road which is marked with KayaSol signs as well.

Driving directions from San Jose

From San Jose our hotel is approximately 5-6 hours.

Take the main Interamerican Highway (Carretera Interamericana) north, heading past the Juan Santamara Airport, northwest towards Guanacaste Province. Follow the signs to San Ramon; stay on the main road all the time, until you see the signs to Puntarenas.

For several hours, the highway winds up and down the mountains of the Central Valley. Eventually, the highway flattens and straightens into a more direct northerly course. After a couple of hours on the flat part of the highway, signs for Liberia appear.

Stay on the highway and watch and follow the signs for the Puente de la Amistad (bridge over the Tempisque river). Follow the bridge signs that are positioned on the right side of the highway for a left turn (note: there is a Shell gas station and a restaurant with a big fake bull on the left side of the road here).

From here turn left and drive following the signs to Puente de la Amistad through a nice concrete road. Once you cross the bridge continue driving following the signs to Nicoya.

From Arenal our hotel is approximately 3-4 hours. Take the road bordering the Arenal Lake, passing the dam and the town of Nuevo Arenal. Go straight through the town of Tilarn and follow the signs to Caas. Once in Caas take a left on the main Interamerican Highway (Carretera Interamericana) South.

Stay on the highway and watch and follow the signs for the Puente de la Amistad (bridge over the Tempisque River). Follow the bridge signs that are positioned on the right side of the highway for a right turn (note: there is a Shell Gas Station and a restaurant with a big fake bull on the left side of the road here).

Driving directions from Tamarindo

There are 2 ways to get to Nosara from Tamarindo: the dirt beach road and the paved highway inland. The beach road is an hour faster however it is only recommended during the high season (november-april). During the rainy season we suggest taking the highway.

Beach Road

The beach road takes approximately 1.5 - 2 hours.

You will drive south along the beach road from Tamarindo through a few tiny fishing villages and many small rivers.

Follow signs to Ostional.

Once past Ostional begin to follow signs to Nosara. You will come to a T intersection. Left will take you into the town of Nosara and right will take you to the beach of Playa Guiones and our hotel. Turn right here and follow the road for about 5 minutes.

After driving through a sharp S curve, you will see a sign for KayaSol on the right which is the first road to the beach. Turn right here past the Mini Super on the left and you will see KayaSol on the right hand side.

Inland Highway

The highway takes approximately 3 hours.

Driving towards the town of Belen. Take a left in a place called Villa Real, follow the way to the town of Huacas and turn right. Take a right in Belens intersection and start following the signs to Nicoya.

Stay always on the main road. You will pass through several towns such as Filadelfia, Santa Cruz and Nicoya.

Take a left turn at the intersection with a 4-way red flashing light, which will take you into Nicoya. Go straight through town without turning, and continue southward on the main paved road for approximately 30 kilometers (following the signs to Samara and Nosara).

Arrival by airplane

There are 2 international airports in Costa Rica: International Airport of Juan Santamara in San Jose (SJO) and Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia (LIR).

San Jose is the biggest airport servicing many different airlines from hubs throughout the world offering lower airfares than Liberia. The drive to KayaSol Surf Hotel is approximately 5 hours, depending on mountain traffic, accidents and construction. Alternatively there are local flights directly to Nosara airport which takes only 45 minutes. Coordinating arrival times to San Jose and departures of the local flights is the quickest method of travel.

Liberia (LIR) is a much smaller airport than San Jose, with limited flights. Tickets are therefore more expensive. The drive to the hotel however, is only 2.5 hours. Local flights to Nosara are also an option.

Arrival by bus

Our most affordable and adventurous option is the local bus service. You can catch a direct bus from the coca-cola station downtown San Jose (which is 20 minutes east of the airport) or anywhere bus stop along the highway to Nosara. The coca-cola station is well known for theft so please be extremely careful by guarding your bags from all directions at all times. If you choose to catch the bus along the highway you will most likely have to stand the duration of the trip. There are also several more buses throughout the day that change buses in Nicoya. The last bus from Nicoya to Nosara is at 5 p.m. The cost of a ticket is only 7 USD-8 USD, however you will most likely have to stay the night in a hotel or hostel depending on what time you arrive.

From Liberia you also will have to change busses in Nicoya. Contact us directly for a more up to date bus schedule.

Directions from the bus: you will have to take the bus to Nicoya then transfer to the bus to Nosara. Playa Guiones is 5 miles before the town of Nosara where the bus stops so you will have to pay attention to be sure you do not end up in Nosara Central. Tell the driver you are going to Playa Guiones, hotel KayaSol. There are 3 roads to Guiones. We are the last one. You can take either the second or third road as both have signs, however the last one is a shorter walk. The bus will stop first at Cafe De Paris/Coconut Harrys which is the first Guiones stop. After the bus stops at Coconut Harrys, skip the second road and get off at the third and final road. Walk straight down the road towards the beach and you will see us on the right, after the Mini Super.

Arrival by taxi

Taxis are the way to go when traveling in groups of 3 or more, or with a lot of luggage and/or boards. From San Jose the drive is 5 to 6 hours and costs 240 USD. From Liberia the drive is 2 and a half to 3 hours and costs 140 USD. We are happy to arrange a driver to meet you at the airport.

"Our family spent a week at this excellent resort. We had the best time and met some very nice people. Everyone from the front office to the bar staff were spot on friendly and ever so helpful. Great food, pool and lodging. Get used to the monkeys howling you awake every morning. We highly recommend Kaya Sol to anyone. Many food options very close by, and a store if you have a kitchen unit. Very short walk to an amazing beach with great surf."

"I can not say enough about the staff (especially manager Sally and front desk)!!! From them alone you should stay here. The airline lost my bags and they were so helpful getting them back to me. I needed a sitter one day and the managers lovely mom watched my 6 yrs old for 4 hours. We stayed in the apartment Casa Paridiso and we wll be back. The pool was great, walk to beach is short, apartment is large and we felt safe. anything we needed they helped with. We can not wait to go back!! The restaurant was also awesome!"

  • Review by a traveler from Miami Beach, Florida

"Can't say enough about this cute property. It's not luxury, but that's not why you come here. It's simple, but simple beautiful and special. The staff is so incredibly nice the private rooms all unique and the shared hostel is always a great place to meet interesting people. The vibe here is just perfect Costa Rica. The ocean is a short walk down either a short jungle path, or a short way along the road. The beach here I have to say is probably favorite in Costa Rica. Great for families, great for friends, great for couples. Great if you're solo too but it's not a destination for solo travels seeking nightlife excitement. Not that kind of vibe. Besides the awesome property, some of the other great things are the plethora of quality, healthy foods available here. Fresh produce a short walk away, little grocery shops and so many great cute little restaurants with delicious and healthy food. For the day: eat just about anywhere. Harmony Hotel has a great cafe and Living cafe is great too. For the night : La Luna is a MUST and I recommend taking the jungle path there, you'll never forget that walk under the stars and it's very safe. Have fun here and soak up the pura vida! "

"We stayed at KayaSol for 2 nights and everything was great. We got the studio apartment with private bathroom and it included a fridge and safe for your valuables. The studio was clean, comfortable, and the bathroom updated. The hotel has its own path to Guiones beach, which is really nice. The hotel is in Guiones North, very central to everything, and it has its own restaurant and pool. The staff there are extremely friendly, professional, and very helpful in guiding you to activities in the area. Our only concern would be that the restaurant is a bit overpriced, but there are other places close by to go to either way.We would stay here again if we ever return to Nosara!"

" Home away from home. For the past 4 years we have been taking solo and group travelers alike to Costa Rica and the high light of their trip is always our stay at Kaya Sol. In the sleepy town of gooiness, this is the perfect place to chill by the pool, relax in the restaurant or head to the beach, which is as close as you can get. Can't thank the crew there enough, keep it up! Gracias!"
