Things to do (optional)

Here is a list of activities and attractions on Isabela to give you an idea of what to plan for when visiting the island. There are two types of activities, those that must be done with a certified guide and those available without.

Guided activities

Las Tintoreras

Tintoreras Islet is a short journey from Puerto Villamil. There are two parts to this tour, a walk and snorkeling session. Its turquoise, crystalline waters are inhabited by a variety of marine life such as the white-tipped reef sharks, Galapagos penguins, marine turtles, and sea lions. Here is one of the main nesting sites for marine iguanas. Kayaking can also be done in this attraction.

Los Tuneles

Meaning the lava tunnels. These are older lava formations that have eroded into tunnels that make up the beach of this part of the island. Here you will do a walk to see various endemic wildlife unique to the Galapagos; you are also sure to see the famous blue-footed boobies nesting in this area. After the walk, there will be a snorkeling session to easily encounter many beautiful sea creatures such as sharks, sea turtles, seahorses, and rays.

Volcano Sierra Negra

By having a caldera of around 6 miles in diameter, it is the largest volcano of the six volcanoes that form Isabela, one of the most volcanically active places on the planet. Take a bus to the highlands to walk to the summit of the caldera and witness the spectacle of its size and the recent lava formations. The hike also goes to Volcano Chico where you can see breathtaking views of Northern Isabela, the isthmus and Elizabeth Bay.

Unguided activities

Concha de Perla

Easy to get to snorkeling wildlife haven. Translated as pearl oyster shell, this area is a calm bay with great visibility that hosts a white coral reef and plenty of special marine life such as golden rays, sea lions, sea turtles, or even the illustrious Galapagos penguin.

Muro de las Lagrimas (Wall of Tears)

This scenic trail is popular as a biking trip, as it is free of vehicles and is typically a long walk, the ride to the Wall of Tears is a relaxing chance to see Galapagos tortoises in the wild, as well as marine iguanas and the various types of flora that cover this relatively young land.

There are stops along the way to swim, see the wetlands and mangrove habitat, as well as hike up to a fantastic lookout point of the coastline following the wall. The wall serves as a historical reminder of a not so cherished period in Ecuadorian history. After the Second World War, there was a penal colony where many prisoners died constructing this wall to nowhere.

Tortoise breeding center

A short, educational trip to learn a lot about conservation efforts of the islands. You can learn about the wildlife and of the giant Galapagos tortoises and see the active population management of the tortoises to bring back their numbers to the levels of the past.

Flamingo Lake

A great little trip to spot these beautiful birds in all their glory. Puerto Villamil has some wetlands around it that help support the habitat for these and many other types of birds. You can easily walk from town to these lagoons.
