Suite bungalows

The seven suite bungalows are nestled deeply into the tropical gardens, affording both more privacy and space than the standard bungalows. They are built in an original circular shape and have traditional palm leaf roofs. All are equipped with A/C and feature a large wooden deck with sitting area, hammocks, and an outdoor shower. There is one king size and two twin beds, a private bathroom with hot water and free Wi-Fi is available. You will also find a coffee maker, a laptop-size safe, and a small refrigerator in each suite bungalow.

The ten brightly colored circular bungalows with their palm leaf roofs are set right behind the beachfront restaurant and a few steps away from the swimming pool. The high ceilings and the windows all around allow the sea breeze to cool the rooms naturally. There is also a ceiling fan for the hottest days or nights. There are one queen-size and two twin beds in each bungalow, as well as a private bathroom with hot water. The guests can also sit on the porch on a couple of comfortable wooden chairs, enjoying the view of the gardens, the swimming pool, or the beach. A coffee maker and free Wi-Fi are available too.

Hotel Playa Negra is located right on the beach, overlooking the world-famous Playa Negra surf break.

Playa Negra

Playa Negra is the break known worldwide since being featured in Bruce Brown’s movie Endless Summer II. Considered by many to be one of the top spots in Costa Rica, Playa Negra has rock bottom with perfect right-hand barrels and well-defined channel for paddling out.

The break has good exposure to both Northern and Southern Hemisphere swells and is reasonably consistent year-round. December through April is the dry season, and surfers can expect steady off-shore breezes, cloudless skies, and flawless conditions. May through November are officially considered to be the rainy months. Lucky is the visitor, however, who finds that he has arrived during one of the numerous “veranillos,” or “little summers”, and encounters perfect conditions and a Southern Hemisphere swell to boot.

Remote from other tourist developments, Playa Negra offers a surfing experience in pristine conditions: crystal clear water, abundant sea life, and remnants of the tropical forest down to the high tide line. Sea turtles and parrot fish cruise the line-up accompanied by schools of brightly colored reef fish. A white sand beach just 100 yards south provides swimming and boogie-boarding opportunities for the whole family. Within walking distance are numerous other breaks, including some offshore reefs for the more adventurous.

A short drive widens your horizons to include dozens of other spots including the reef, beach, and river mouth breaks at Avellanas, a quick 10 minutes by car from Hotel Playa Negra. Another half hour brings you to Tamarindo, the sometimes-crowded surfing capital of Guanacaste, with the nearby breaks of Playa Grande and Langosta and its interesting nightlife.

The restaurant and bar are located right on the beach, under a large circular palm leaf roof, traditionally called “rancho” in Costa Rica. Guests have a perfect view of the waves and can enjoy the sea breeze while relaxing with a beverage or enjoying a meal in a quiet and casual ambiance.

The kitchen staff prepares all the meals with fresh local products. You can enjoy a wide variety of food, from the traditional Costa Rican “casados” to different salads and tropical fruit platters or heartier fare such as fresh fish, lobster and other seafood, first choice tenderloin steaks, as well as hamburgers, sandwiches, and pasta. The menu also features vegetarian and gluten free dishes, as well as kid’s meals.

The fresh fruit smoothies are famous, as are the cocktails, margaritas, mojitos, caipirinhas, daiquiris and piña coladas, the favorites for chilling out at sunset.

The restaurant is open non-stop for meals from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 pm., and the bar stays open later at night. Please note that the restaurant is closed for the period of September to October.
