Being the birthplace of surfing giants Rip Curl and Quiksilver, Torquay has its own unique surf culture with the Surf Plaza boasting flagship stores and discount stores to cater for every well-known surf brand around. "We were in Melbourne for the weekend for a concert on a Saturday night so were looking for a daytime activity to pass the time on the Sunday before a flight home. This was perfect! Alistair picked us up from the city (where it was 8 degrees and pouring down) and drove us out to Torquay (where the sun was shining, thank god) for a beginners surf class. In a small group, we were all given a safety brief and went over the basics with Alistair who clearly knows his stuff but delivers it in a fun, laid back way. It was fun to be in a group to encourage/laugh at each other but at the same time, we were all given enough 1 on 1 time to get personalized advice from Alistair. I definitely feel confident enough to do it again now by myself. All in all a great day out. So tiring, though - beware if you have plans for after that all you'll want is a hot shower and a nap. The beach is lovely, nothing scary in the water at all and lunch is a subway sandwich which is just right for getting back into the water after."

"Via Backpackers World Travel in Melbourne, I ended up with the Great Ocean Road Surf Tours in Torquay. I expected lots of group fun, but the first day, the lessons I got were only shared with one other guy. It is because it is not that warm yet, does not matter, wetsuit and shoes will keep you warm. After all, it was fine, having only one other guy, so Matt could cheer for every good wave I caught! The next day, I got two other teachers, but they have had spoken about my first lesson, as I got a smaller board the next day, because I was doing well. So, good intern communication, if you are going multiple days. As there still were just not that many people, I could again enjoy a lot of teaching. And that is what I came for. Chris and Ben were teaching together, and were quite good in balance, both told nicely what you could improve, but if you ended up below the waves, Chris would cheer for everything you did right, and blame the waves where it went wrong, and Ben would look after you, if you were okay. The last day, I could enjoy a nice balanced group of people, and saw the coaches handle a lot of people at one time, putting a lot of smiles on those faces."

"I had a fantastic time. As total novices, we were taught the basics by our attentive instructor Al, and he guided us all the way until we were riding the waves! I highly recommend this place for first timers."

"I did the 10-day shredder which is a great way to get really into surfing. I was able to stand up within the first two hours and as you make progress they will show you how to improve your pop up, how to turn, how to recognize good waves etc. Over these 10 days I had surf lessons with different surf instructors, so thanks to Chris, Laura, Lucas, Matt, Rye, Tom and everyone else I forgot to mention. The good thing about staying for a couple of days is that you will surf at different beaches and you can try different surfboards as you are making progress.Unfortunately, I was not able to do the Great Ocean Road Sightseeing because of the bushfires, but I got an additional surfing day for that which was great, otherwise I would have probably missed the day with the most awesome waves. When I go to Victoria the next time I will definitely come back for another few days of surfing."

"I had a great day with Al of Great Ocean Road Surf tours. I was the only person from Melbourne for this one-day surf trip so I was transported from there to Torquay with other groups and dropped off, and then we headed out from there. Al was super stoked on surfing and was a wealth of knowledge about the surrounding area and ocean. The surfing was great, smaller in the morning while we were all getting ready and bigger in the afternoon. We surfed for about 4 hours total with a small break for lunch in between. The lunch was pretty basic, but that is fine when you have been surfing all morning. At the end of the day, Al dropped me off at the local train to go back to Melbourne. This was a nice way to see more scenery and was quick and efficient, dropping me off at Southern Cross station back in Melbourne. All in all, I had a great day, got a ton of surf and was able to surf to my own level despite it being more of a beginner surf lesson. Al really did his best to make it a fantastic day for our entire group."
