Program

Beginner and intermediate surf lessons

If you are a first-time surfer or want to improve your surfing skills, this is the lesson for you. Dominical Waverider is going to teach you all the basics of surfing such as carrying your surfboard, attaching the leash, safety tips, paddling techniques, standing up on the surfboard, and catching the waves. The surf instructors will start the lessons with thorough instructions on the beach. You will then head out to the water to practice and ride your first wave.

Besides learning the basics of surfing, the lessons will equip you with the proper surfing etiquette, safety knowledge, and how to care for your equipment in the surf, while ensuring you are up and riding by the end of the session. The surfing lessons run on a daily basis all season. However, the times may vary depending on the tides and conditions each day. The surf instructors are certified Costa Rica lifeguards and experienced surf instructors. So, you can be confident you’re in safe and expert hands at all times.

Included excursions

On this surf camp, a guided visit to a local sight-seeing and swimming at a beautiful waterfall are included in the package. You can also choose one complimentary excursion of canopy zip-lining tour, stand-up paddle boarding, mangrove kayaking, or massage.

Instructors

More
More was the last acquisition on the Dominical Lifeguards team and with dedication, became an amazing waterman. He is a very chill guy and nothing can take away his smile and friendly vibe. His eager and fast learning ability quickly earned respect from the other team members and soon, he started working with the surf camp teaching others to surf, how to be safe in the water, and to respect the ocean.
Simon
Simon is a local and rips whether it’s a round house, tail blasts, or 360 airs - he can do it all and help you get there too. He competes in national and local surf contests and has accumulated many titles over the years. He is a great surf instructor for all surfer levels.
Jorge Flaco
Flaco is a Tico ( Costa Rica native) and one of the top surfers in the water. His smile and “pura vida” vibe is infectious. When he is not keeping the beach safe, surfing, or skating, just take a look around and you will see him talking to everyone. Flaco is a super friendly guy and if you are having your lesson and he is there, consider yourself lucky, because he’s one of the best.
Jeanine
Jeanine is from exotic Brazil and one of the co-owners and operators of Waverider surf camp. She is a fun and friendly instructor who is very helpful with those new to surfing through her attention to details and warm instructional style. When she is not working or surfing, she loves to spend time in her garden or doing yoga. Jeanine is a great surf instructor, eager to help you understand the fundamentals of surfing as well as a love and respect for the ocean.
Natalia Natti
Natti is from Argentina and was drawled to Costa Rica to surf warm water and explore the beauties of the country. She felt in love with the ‘Pura Vida’ lifestyle and soon made Dominical her new home. She is a good surfer and an excellent instructor, very patient, and kind. Her warm instruction style makes the beginners feel extra comfortable to ride the waves.

Location

This trip will be held in Dominical, Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a popular surf destination among surfers world wide. It has tropical beaches, warm water, and good waves up and down the coast. Playa Dominical is located in the southern zone and home to one of the best and most consistent beach breaks in the country. You can always count-on shoulder-high waves to ride. Dominical Waverider also has point breaks nearby. Further south on the coast, they have the legendary point break of Pavones.

Surf spots

Playa Ballena

Home to the famous 'whale’s tail', a large, kilometer-long sandbar that can be accessed on foot at low tide, Marino Ballena National Park in Uvita is an ocean-lovers’ paradise. From October through March, humpback whales and their kin can be spotted close to the coast. Dolphins swim in abundance in these calm waters as well. Expect to pay about 10 USD per person to enter the beach.

Playa Dominical

Considered as the most consistent surfing spot in the nation, Dominical beach starts on the south side of the Baru River and stretches for more than a mile. Typically surfed at medium-to-high tides, the waves in Dominical are both powerful and thrilling. Lifeguards are on duty daily. In addition to water sports, there are several restaurants and tons of shopping. Check out the local vendor’s tables as they offer everything from jewelry to dresses to beach gear. It never hurts to bargain to get more bang for your buck. This is the most popular beach in the area.

Playa Dominicalito

Just three kilometers south of Dominical lies Dominicalito, a quiet fishing village with smaller waves than its neighbor to the north. The waves can be very children-friendly, but it’s always a good idea to watch out for rocks when entering and exiting the ocean, particularly at lower tides. Dominicalito is also a great place to purchase fresh fish when local boats arrive during the afternoons.

Playa Hermosa

Playa Hermosa is a long stretch of sandy beach, 10 minutes south of Playa Dominicalito. It’s a perfect beach for surfing and body boarding, although the waves are typically smaller than in Dominical. There is a lifeguard on duty almost every day at Playa Hermosa, which makes it a safe beach. Playa Hermosa is a fantastic place to purchase ceviche from area vendors and mingle with locals on the weekends.

Playa Pinuela

This beach is home to tranquil waves and is almost always empty. If you are looking for a private, secluded beach, look no further.

Playa Tortugas

Named after the tiny turtles that sometimes grace its shores, Playa Tortuga is just south of Ojochal and sits on the banks of an active river mouth.

Playa Uvita

Playa Uvita is 11 miles south of Dominical along the coastal highway. It’s a charming two-mile white sand beach with swaying palm trees and some shady relief from the Pacific sun. The waves are smaller than in Dominical and swimming conditions are ideal. The beach is part of the Marino Ballena National Park, so fishing is strictly prohibited.

Playa Ventanas

Playa Ventanas is a favorite beach for locals and is located near the town of Ojochal. There is a palm-tree laden cove that features a pair of distinct caves that can only be explored on a low tide. There’s also a secure parking lot directly in front the beach and several top-end restaurants located close to town. The sunsets there are second to none. It’s a great place for a family trip.
