Arrive in Managua and be met by your leaders at the airport terminal. Transportation is provided to the beautiful HulaKai Hotel overlooking Playa Maderas, outside of San Juan del Sur. This will be your home base for the week. Enjoy welcome drinks, meet your guides, decide on preferred boards, and take a look at the unforgettable week ahead of you.
Take some time to settle in to your accommodations and meet the other retreat participants. Depending on arrival times, you may be able to sneak in a sunset surf. End the day with aperitifs and a group meal at HulaKai, overlooking the surf and sunset.
If you have the energy, take a short stroll down the hill with your board for a sunrise session at Playa Maderas. Enjoy breakfast and an optional daily yoga session. Jump into four-wheel drive off-road vehicles and head to the beach. Based on your abilities and wind and tide conditions, your retreat group will surf one of the three stunning area breaks. A delicious lunch will be prepared for you on the beach once you have worked up an appetite in the water.
Surf a little more after lunch or simply relax on the beach. Return to the hotel for happy hour or, if you are keen, have a sunset surf at Playa Maderas. Venture out to Café Artesano or visit a secretly-selected private home for a unique dinner served up by a Michelin star chef. After dinner, replay waves in your head as you try to fall asleep so that you can do it all again the next day.
Start your morning in the same wondrous fashion as the previous day. Enjoy a sunrise surf and head back up for a freshly-inspired breakfast. Stretch out with some yoga on the balcony or compose yourself for the day ahead. Late in the morning, you will make your way to the Playa Hermosa Beach Club where this day will be mostly spent. Get some instruction and pointers from the guides and explore the expansive beach, which was the setting for the television show, Survivor.
If you're feeling up for it, you can join the leaders on a 15-minute walk to a lesser-known, often empty break instead. You will then return to the hotel around mid-afternoon to prepare for the evening's activities. After heading to San Juan for happy hour or exploring a little around town, you will cap off the night at G+G’s Gourmet with a specially-prepared private dinner.
Begin the day with surfing at Playa Maderas. Follow up your session with breakfast and an optional yoga class at the hotel. Spend the rest of the morning lounging by the pool, getting a massage, or just relaxing with your group. The afternoon will be spent on a panga, or open fishing boat, that will leave from a neighboring beach. Depending on what breaks are looking best for that day, your group will head out and surf.
After the surfing session, try your hand at catching fish on the way home while enjoying rum drinks and the company of the group. Take in the sunset as you cruise back to the Playa Maderas area. Return to the hotel for dinner or, if you desire, take a cooking class with private local chefs to get a first-hand experience of Nicaragua's fresh cooking style. Use the rest of this night to relax with your group and share stories from the previous days.
Today will be spent almost entirely away from the home base. You will cruise to San Juan in the morning, allowing some time to buy souvenirs, shop local boutiques, and take in some of the town. After that, you will head to the town port to embark on an epic day trip aboard a 50-foot wooden-decked sailboat specifically designed for surf expeditions.
You will be treated to amazing food, stunning views, yoga, and fishing as the yacht sails north to some of Nicaragua’s best waves. This day also guarantees a water photographer. Enjoy the amenities on board as you head back towards San Juan. Back at the hotel, you will have a final dinner together, followed by awards and a beach bonfire.
If flight times allow, you will head to the beach for one last surf, followed by goodbyes and the always-challenging task of packing up and leaving a very stunning place. You will then be accompanied to the airport and left with a lifetime of memories and new friends to keep you company on your journey home.
