As a paddler, Cuba is a dream for many reasons not the least of which is being part of an exclusive club, for few outsiders who have ever paddled Cuban waters. From intra-mountainous lakes to the crystalline waters of the salt flats and the dynamic waters of the Caribbean Sea, Cuba is truly paradise for the adventurous paddler. You will be staying in multiple accommodations during this SUP camp. The accommodation would range from staying in hotels, casa, glamping, and villa. You will be spending your first night in Hotel Hanabanilla, next night glamping in Rio Negro Glamping, one night in Casa Particulars, next night in Hotel Horizontes Villa Guamá, and the final three nights in Villa Guajimico.
Today, more than half of Cuba’s plants and animals are found nowhere else on the planet. From leaping crocodiles, bat-eating boas, and millions of bright orange crabs marching through the forest each year, to miniature frogs, the world’s smallest hummingbird and the Caribbean’s largest flock of flamingos, Cuba surprises at every turn. The island is also home to arguably the healthiest coral reef ecosystems in the Caribbean, if not the world.
Today is your first day, arrive at Abel Santamaría Airport (SNU). You will be welcomed at the airport lobby by your bilingual Cuban guide and professional bus driver. Before leaving for the tour, exchange your money into the local Cuban currency (CUC). Today, lunch is not included. However, please note if your flight arrives in time for lunch, Cuba Adventure Company will arrange a meal at a private restaurant for you. After which you will take a two-hour bus ride to the Escambray mountains of southern Cuba. Today, you will be staying at Hotel Hanabanilla, dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m.
Start your day at 7:30 a.m. with breakfast and then check out of the hotel and load your personal belongings on to the bus. Please make sure that you pack some warm clothes for the overnight. Today, you will be paddling 10 kilometers to the small mountain village of El Nicho. This will be followed by a one and half kilometer walk through the mountain community.
Today, you will have lunch at a private restaurant. This will be followed by a walk to El Nicho national waterfall park where you will get to see spectacular pools, falls, and scenery that will excite your senses. This is also a great place to go for a swim in the cool mountain pools or hike back to river.
Next, you will paddle eight kilometers to Rio Negro. Today's dinner will be at 7:30 p.m. You will be glamping in Rio Negro under the thatched roof structures above the lake and nestled in the lush tropical jungle. Fresh linen, blanket, and foam mattresses for sleeping will all be supplied. If you need more than that please feel free to bring your own light weight sleeping bag and a camp pillow.
Please note that stand-up paddle boarders will take a slightly different route on this day that isn’t as long and lunch will had at Rio Negro.
Start your day with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Today, you will hike to a panoramic view of lake Hanabanilla and the Escambray Mountains. Next, you will paddle eight kilometers to Jibacoa Dam. Next take a 4x4 mountain truck ride to Topes De Collates where you will have coffee or tea at mountain coffee house and mountain tea shop or botanical house.
Today's lunch will be in the mountains at a private restaurant. You will once again take the 4x4 mountain truck ride down the mountain to meet up with bus. You will take a one and half-hour bus ride to Ceinfuegos where you will have a city tour in Ceinfuegos. Check into your accommodation for the night in Casa Particulars. Today's dinner will be at a local home or private restaurant at 7:30 p.m.
The Zapata region of Cuba boasts the largest protected park lands in all of the Caribbean. Have your breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Next, take a two and half-hour drive to the “Bay of Pigs”. Today, have a bagged lunch on shore before launching for a one and half to two-hour paddling through the salt flats of the Zapata National Park.
Next, take a bus to Guamá Islands in the treasure lagoon and take a 20-minute boat ride into the lagoon to check-in to traditional Taino cabin of Hotel Horizontes Villa Guamá and explore the islands. Today's dinner will be at 7:30 p.m.
Today, you will be recommended paddling before breakfast through the mangroves and around the islands. After breakfast at 7:30 a.m., do two and half hours of paddle across Treasure Lagoon and through mangrove channels. Visit the breeding center of the unique Cuban crocodiles. You will have lunch at La Boca de Guamá restaurant.
After lunch, depart to Cienfuegos City for a city tour and then depart to Guajimico, a nature lover’s paradise located on ancient coral cliffs surrounded by aqua blue waters. You will be staying in cabins at Villa Guajimico. You will have dinner at 7:30 p.m.
Have your breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Today, you will do an ocean paddle to Paradise Cove. If you are interested in snorkeling, bring your own gear and you can snorkel around some of the healthiest coral reefs in the Caribbean. Today's lunch will be at Guajimico followed by hike to hidden cave systems (please make sure to pack a headlight or flashlight). You will continue your stay at Villa Guajimico followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. and dance under stars.
Today after breakfast at 7:30 a.m. the group will have the option to either paddle to an isolated beach to swim and horseback ride to La Vaga ranch for lunch. However, if this paddle is a little too ambitious, you can choose to paddle the waters close to Guajimico and then catch the bus to La Vaga for lunch and horseback ride if interested.
Take a horseback ride back to the beach and paddle back to the Villa Guajimico for dinner at 7:30 p.m. followed by dance under the stars. Please note that stand-up paddle boarders will take a slightly different route on this day that isn’t as long.
After breakfast, enjoy free time until you head to Abel Santamaría Airport (SNU) via a private shuttle. Have a safe flight home and hope to see you again on another Cuba Adventure Company getaway.
