Things to do (optional)

Surfing at Cronulla Beach

Cronulla Beach Backpackers has an excellent range of surfing breaks catering from beginner to expert. Grab one of Cronulla Beach Backpackers’s bodyboards (they’re free!) and catch a wave.

Cronulla Beach in Sydney stretches several kilometers from the center of town to Voodoo Reef Break. The southern end has a wide selection of reef breaks such as the world famous Cronulla Point and Shark Island.

Surfing lessons are available from local surfing companies and can be booked through the Cronulla Beach Backpackers. You can also hire surf boards and wetsuits.

The water temperatures are rarely below 14 degrees centigrade, even in the middle of winter, so surfing in a wetsuit is still comfortable. In the summer of course everyone enjoys the casual Sydney surf beach lifestyle clad in as little as possible.

The Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club endeavours to provide the aquatic users of the Bate Bay beaches with an exceptional level of water safety, maintaining patrolled beaches throughout the summer months.

Nightlife in Cronulla Beach

There are plenty of things happening at Cronulla at night if you want it or just kick back and relax in good company. Cronulla and the neighboring suburbs have a vast range of nightlife, from pubs, clubs and nightclubs through cafes, restaurants and theaters.

Scuba diving in Cronulla Beach

The Cronulla Beach area has some of the best scuba diving in Sydney Australia and with Cronulla Beach Backpackers in-house Sydney dive school and scuba diving shop, scuba-diving, Aquatic Explorers, now in Sydney so you are ready when you hit the reef. Working travelers especially do this whilst they have the time and the money.

Learn to dive and get your international PADI license before you travel up to the Great Barrier Reef for a substantially cheaper rate.

Cronulla Beach Backpackers also has some great accommodation and scuba diving package deals. Enquire about these when booking, or at the front desk of the hostel when you check in for accommodation.

A wide range of dive experiences are available with dives at Shelly Beach in South Cronulla and Cape Solander, Kurnell.

Scuba diving with sharks

Don’t miss diving with the grey nurse sharks off the cliffs just south of Maroubra. There is a permanent colony of grey nurse sharks very close to Botany Bay Sydney. Grey nurse sharks are great fun to dive with. They look scary, but are actually quite timid animals that would never try and bite a diver unless under extreme provocation.

The grey nurse sharks are headed for extinction due to lack of knowledge of the species and scuba divers of the future may not have the opportunity that we do to dive with them today.

Visit the Royal National Park

The Royal National Park on the southern border of Sydney, New South Wales Australia, is Australia’s first national park and after Yellowstone in the U.S.A. was the second national park to be established in the world.

The park was originally named The National Park but this was changed in 1955 after a quick visit by Queen Elizabeth II to the Royal National Park.
