Cool Vibes Hostel is located in Playa Dominical, Costa Rica.

Playa Dominical is known as the most consistent surf spot in Costa Rica. There is almost always a wave worth riding. It is also known as a powerful break. It is almost impossible to surf at dead low tide as the waves close out into the very shallow water. The mid-tides are great for more advanced surfers. The waves at mid-tide are faster and hollower and always less crowded. The high-tide wave is the most popular but on smaller days is too mushy and frustrates short boarders. This is a good condition to pull out the longboard and frustrate the short boarders even more. The bigger the wave, the more you should focus on high tide.

On big wave days, the current can be strong. It is usually best to walk to the end of the beach at the foot of the current and let it push you up or down as the case may be. The beach runs from the southeast to the northwest. Looking straight out to sea perpendicular to the beach, you are looking at an angle of 210 degrees southwest. This means that a swell coming from 210 degrees is most likely going to be closing out, where a swell coming from under 200 degrees or over 220 (rare) will have better form. Usually, but not always, when the waves come from less than 210 degrees, the current flows south to north. When it rains, the river can act up and dump some pretty nasty, cold, and muddy water. So, if it is raining, most people tend to stick further south near the cell tower.

Things to do (optional)

Diving trips to Isla del Caño

This is world-class scuba diving. Caño Island is all about abundant marine life and pelagic fish. Each dive site is unique. You can see white tip reef sharks resting in a small cave, search under ledges, drift in currants, or maneuver a swim through.

Between dives, you'll enjoy a gourmet picnic on the beach. You can relax, take a nap in the shade, or hike a trail up to the archeological site and lookout with your guide. For those who want to be more active, you can always play a game of beach ball or water volleyball.

You leave from Playa Uvita. This is a pleasant ride that takes on average only one and a quarter to one and a half hours depending on conditions. Keep an eye open for sightings of whales, dolphins, and sea turtles depending on the season.

Important Caño Island is a protected marine reserve so the number of persons allowed in the water at any one time and the number of people allowed in per day is limited. This is truly an experience you do not want to miss.

La Poza Azul

A great place that you may want to visit during your stay in Dominical Beach, Costa Rica, is the refreshing Poza Azul waterfall, also known as Dominical waterfall, located approximately five minutes south of Dominical.

Look for a sign on the left that says Poza Azul, follow the gravel road for approximately two minutes, and after passing a creek, look for a wider area (left) on the road where cars park, the waterfall is in front.

You cannot see the waterfall from the road, you have to cross the road and look for the stairs that go down to the waterfall. There are no signs so it is always advisable to ask.

At Dominical waterfall, you can swim in the crystalline waters and enjoy the surrounding nature. It is common to see beautiful birds like parrots and toucans in the trees around the waterfall.

Surf lessons

Surf lessons are scheduled depending on the tides. You will start your surf lesson with a workshop where you will learn the basics of surfing, safety tips, paddling techniques, standing up on a board, and riding waves.

Whale and dolphin watching

The dolphin and whale watching tour will bring you to some of the most beautiful spots along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, which includes the Marino Ballena National Park, the area surrounding Caño Island, and the Osa Peninsula coastline, near Corcovado National Park.

Whitewater rafting on Savegre River

Class II and III. The Savegre River is considered the most pristine river in Costa Rica. It is the perfect rafting river for families and young kids. Its rapids are lots of fun. During the descent, you will have the chance to enjoy the canyons, waterfalls, and tropical scenery. Along the run, you will stop to enjoy the waterfalls and have some lunch.

Try the "Bamboo Yoga" experience. A wonderful place to enjoy this relaxing activity. A great teacher team will offer you a full planning of different yoga styles in a very cozy atmosphere.
