Hole-in-the-Wall hike

An always popular 3-hour walk to one of the regions most beautiful natural features. This 9-kilometer coastal hike takes you through remote rural villages, passing the baby Hole-in-the-Wall before reaching the Mpako River that passes through the Hole-in-the-Wall. Relax under the milk woods or go for a swim while the guide prepares a tasty lunch of sandwiches toasted on the open fire. If the ocean permits, try a daring jump into the hole. Coffee Shack will then drive you back along the scenic gravel road, arriving just in time for a sundowner with a favourite drink.

Mpuzi cliffs and caves

If you enjoy exploration and adventure, this is the day trip for you. A spectacular day spent picking your way down goat paths along the Mpuzi cliff edge. Check out the caverns and the Bat Cave, discover hidden pathways and secret pools and do some mind-blowing cliff jumps! Scramble back up the rocks and teeter across the land-bridge back to the camp for lunch under the trees. Then get the adrenalin going again with a cliff jump into the Mpuzi River before returning to Coffee Shack.

Village walk

Take a walk into the hills with one of the local guides and experience a way of life far removed from yours. The Xhosa people in the Transkei still live a very traditional lifestyle. You will get to see the sacred pools, get your face painted with clay and have a traditional Xhosa meal at a Mamas hut. After a delicious meal youll stroll to the shebeen to sample some maize beer and maybe even get to visit the local traditional healer to test some of their traditional medicine. This is a genuine experience where you will get to interact with the locals, ask questions and learn a lot.

Village dinner

Every friday, you are invited by one of three families to attend a traditional Xhosa meal, singing and dancing and a chance to talk to the locals about life, customs and traditions in the area.

Village overnight

Coffee Shack supports Elvin and his family in opening his home to Coffee Shack guests if they would like to experience and learn more about the realities of life in a traditional rural Transkei village. It is a chance to get involved in family life and learn the traditional roles of men and women in the family, collect water, collect wood, make mud bricks, look after the animals, share a meal and learn the Xhosa language.

Beach day

On beach days, you get a chance to have a surf lesson, play volley ball or soccer, relax in the sun or under the trees and make use of the surf boards after your lesson. If you have already had a surf lesson and just want to use the boards, then you can also join in. If you just want to come and relax on the beach, have lunch and read a book while your friends tackle the waves, then you can also sign up.

  • 5 breakfasts and dinners
  • 5 nights accommodation
  • 7 surfing lessons
  • Board hire
  • Transfers
  • Wetsuits and boards for the lessons

"This was a great place to stay as a family. We took the Kings House and it was perfect for us as a family of 4 but could have easily fitted a couple more in. "

"I was skeptical initially as this is a backpackers and we were a family, but I'm so glad we decided to choose this place instead of a Hotel. We all had such a great experience."

"A warm, friendly, laid back and interesting place to stay. Loads going on every day and night. Walks, surfing, drumming, local village evenings the list goes on .... all delivered by passionate, wonderful staff. We extended our stay here and had three brilliant surf lessons all of us getting up under the expert guidance we received."

"Dave and Bels have done such a great job with Coffee Shack. It is a brilliant backpacker set in one of the most beautiful places in South Africa and the world. But wait, there is more! I do not think I have come across a backpacker in the world that gives so much back to the community. It is pretty amazing what they have done- the school, the clinics, the jobs they generate, the empowerment, the volunteers. Definitely visit this place when you are in South Africa. It is just brilliant."

"Lovely food and wonderful staff in a beautiful location is what makes this place so very special! With a beachfront location in Coffee Bay, you do not want to miss this place. Being in the evening chill by the bar with drinks, playing some pool and on some nights, the partying can get crazy! Otherwise, it is a wonderful place to just chill and enjoy the beach. They offer daily activities you can join in to keep yourself busy if you like as well and I actually managed to stand up once while surfing, which is a huge thing for me! Great stay."

"The Coffee Shack was the ideal base for exploring the beautiful Wild Coast. As we liked it quiet, we asked for a double room on the other side of the river and this was perfect for us. We loved everything, from sleeping in our own rondavel which was spacious and nicely furnished, sharing clean toilets and showers nearby, and having a fully equipped kitchen and braai for self-catering. To reach the main area with restaurant, bar, reception and free Wi-Fi, we crossed the river which was fun. We had to watch for the tides but that was never a problem. They serve excellent cappuccino and of course meals. There are daily activities to choose from, but you can do your own things too. From the moment we arrived, we knew this place is competently managed by genuine hosts who do not only have their guests in mind but more importantly their local community! We recommend you for this. It made our stay even more enjoyable!"

"We have only been here one night but Coffee Shack is a really nice place. They have a great chill out area where you can also have breakfast and dinner together with everyone. The bar with cold beer and a lot of shots is right next to it. They also have a pool table. The staff is friendly and does all kind of day tours. The sea with nice beaches is right at the backpackers."
