Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, in São Jorge's island, a place of rare beauty, a natural sanctuary, and, for those who know it, a place of pilgrimage and deep connection with nature. Amidst the beauty of this luscious land and the vast sea, they will share with you what they love doing the most - surfing, yoga, and meditation.
You will be staying at the local Surf Lodge. The style of the accommodation is simple and yet has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The rooms are shared and single sex (unless you ask otherwise). The main house, where the yoga hall is situated, has two double rooms en-suite, one triple room en-suite and a double room mezzanine. The cottage, just around the corner from the main house, has a double room, a triple mezzanine and shared bath room. The Surf Lodge houses are surrounded by green fields, backed by steep lush mountains and faced with the vast blue ocean.
The day starts with a yoga and meditation practice, followed by a really yummy and nutritious breakfast. What comes next depends largely on weather and ocean conditions. Some people might go surfing (there are surfing classes everyday), whilst others might choose go hiking to one of the waterfalls, snorkelling in the lagoon or take the SUP for a ride. After lunch tends to be a chill out time. We usually close the day with an outdoors meditation practice before supper. Evenings vary a lot, depending on the group's mood. Sometimes we sit around the camp fire chatting and star gazing, other times we end up dancing into the night. Centro Upaya has all the equipment you need for surfing, scuba diving, yoga, and meditation but you are welcome to bring your own gear.
Scuba diving can be organized on request.

When you see, for the first time, the little village hugged around a deep blue lagoon and backed by steep lush mountains, you will know you have arrived at a special place.
Given the remoteness of where you are staying, make sure you have your basics packed for the journey. But don't worry, if forget something or need something, their staff can take care of that.
They are right in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, so the cook relies a lot on what the ocean has to offer and makes the most of the fantastic local produce. There’s also always a vegetarian option and plenty of fresh fruit. Given the remote nature of the location, it is difficult to cater for special diets but let Centro Upaya know your needs in advance. Please also keep in mind this is a no intoxicants retreat (no drugs or alcohol).
Whilst surfing, meditation, and yoga are the core activities of the retreat, there are also incredible walks to be discovered, trips to the nearby waterfalls, scuba diving, stand up paddling, and plenty of time for doing nothing and unwinding.
