Surf lessons and surfboard and wetsuit rentals are available. Summer and fall are the perfect seasons to visit Riis beach. Quiet sunrise beach walks give way to the bustling "people's beach", with the Riis Park Beach Bazaar's food vendors, beach equipment rentals, and regular live entertainment scattered up and down the boardwalk. So, you know where to go.

Accommodations at Camp Rockaway include furnished safari tents. Just steps from the ocean, the property offers a communal fire pit, a picnic area, camp store, hammocks, and games.

The 10' x 12' canvas Wall Tents are designed for those who love being on the sand and in the surf during the day but want the comforts of home at night. Each tent is set on a raised wood platform with a deck and two canvas lounge chairs.

All you need to bring is your overnight bag. Wall Tents are furnished with a queen-size bed featuring a memory foam mattress, side tables, lights, pillows, linens, towels, and a cell phone charging station.

Restrooms and showers are conveniently located within the campground. The facilities have hot and cold water. Water conservation is a key component of Camp Rockaway’s commitment to the environment. Campers are encouraged to keep showers brief.

A 300-watt solar-powered battery (located in the common area) is capable of charging multiple devices. A Wi-Fi hotspot is located in the common area. Each Wall Tent is equipped with a Voltaic Shine Solar Light plus USB charger capable of charging any USB device. Portable, beach-ready Voltaic Arc 10W Solar Chargers are available for on a first-come-first-served basis.

Location

Camp Rockaway is located at the Jacob Riis bathhouse. Jacob Riis Park is located in Rockaway, within the Gateway Recreation Area of New York and New Jersey. Biking, birding, nature watching, fishing, hiking, and more are just a short walk away in historic Fort Tilden.

Food

Feel free to bring your own food. The fire pit has a grill and may be used in the evenings. You are recommended bringing food that is already prepared and does not require water. There is no refrigeration. Guests must store all food in their cars. Please keep in mind there are no facilities for washing dishes.

Driving directions from the west

  • Take the Gil Hodges (Marine Parkway) Bridge, follow signs for Riis Park / Far Rockaway.
  • Parking is located in the Jacob Riis Park parking lot. You must pay the national park parking fee - Camp Rockaway is not permitted to waive the charge. Please remember to put both your national park parking pass and your Camp Rockaway parking pass on the dashboard of your car after you check in.

Driving directions from the east

  • From Cross Bay Boulevard, take the Cross Bay Bridge and take the exit toward Riis Park.
  • Merge onto Beach Channel Drive.
  • After approximately 1 mile, turn left onto Beach 116th Street, then right onto Rockaway Beach Boulevard.
  • Follow Rockaway Beach Boulevard for approximately 1.7 miles.
  • At the traffic circle, take the second exit and park in the Jacob Riis Park parking lot.
  • You must pay the national park parking fee - Camp Rockaway is not permitted to waive the charge. Please remember to put both your national park parking pass and your Camp Rockaway parking pass on the dashboard of your car after you check in.

Arrival by airplane

Arrival by bus

The Q22 and Q35 provide seasonal summer service to and from Jacob Riis Park.

Arrival by ferry / boat

The NYC Ferry departs from Wall Street / Pier 11 (Gouverneur Lane at South Street, F.D.R. Drive Manhattan, NY 10005), and from Sunset Park (140 58th Street Brooklyn, NY 11220).

The Rockaway ferry landing is located at Beach 108th Street and Beach Channel Drive and connects to the Q22 bus - take the bus west to Jacob Riis Park. A free ferry shuttle connects to Jacob Riis Park Road / Bath House. There is an A and S-train connection between Beach 105th Street and Rockaway Freeway.
