Contrary to popular belief windsurfing is actually one of the easiest of the four disciplines to learn! Bodie's School of Surf utilizes special beginner boards and sails that are designed to be ultra-stable and lightweight in order to minimize the amount of physical effort required. Although a solid "core" workout is one of the many advantages to be gained from windsurfing, Bodie's School of Surf tries to ensure your workout is achieved by actually windsurfing and not just from lifting a heavy sail out of the water. "Strength is achieved not required!"
The lessons are conducted on a quiet beach in Oistins Bay. In the event of unsuitable conditions, the lesson may be relocated or postponed to ensure safety and provide the most ideal learner conditions. There is a limited amount of equipment for intermediate / advanced windsurfers to rent. You will be provided with the gear and briefed on the area, the prevailing conditions, and safety. However, rentals are generally unsupervised and any breakage or damage due to negligence on your part will be charged for.
From water baby to waterman! Having grown up in a house by the beach, there was only one path in life for young Bodie and learning to swim at the same time he was learning to walk was evidence of that. By age nine, Bodie was learning to windsurf. At age 13, he was learning to surf and as an already accomplished windsurfer, he began working as a part-time instructor during the summer holidays for international windsurf center Club Mistral.
Rusty is one of Bodie's lifelong friends and an extremely experienced windsurf instructor, having worked as a branch manager and instructor at Club Mistral for nearly 15 years until its closure on the island. A talented windsurfer / surfer himself, Rusty is another of the islands well known "watermen" having also worked as a scuba instructor and manager of the watersports division at a number of south coast hotels during his years. Rusty oversees all the windsurf rentals and shares the windsurfing tuition responsibilities. As a long time instructor, Rusty also has a great passion for teaching. He carries with him a wealth of experience in the sport and you won't meet a friendlier face on the island or anyone with longer dreadlocks!
Affectionately known as "the gem of the Caribbean", Barbados is the most easterly and one of the smallest islands (21 x 14 miles) in the Caribbean. Still, the island boasts over 70 miles of stunning coastline, surrounded by warm (70 - 80 degrees Fahrenheit / 21 - 27 degrees Celsius year round) and "user-friendly" water. The fact is that there has never been a reported shark attack in Barbados and there is a local saying that goes "if you are scared of sharks, the safest place in Barbados is in the sea!".
Friendly seas and friendly people, what a perfect combination for a watersports holiday! So, whether its the large and powerful Atlantic swell crashing on the east coast, the tranquil waters of the west coast, or the diverse conditions in the south, Barbados provides the perfect opportunity for almost any watersport you desire. From scuba to surfing to jet skis and catamarans, Barbados is the place to be!
The surf school is mobile in order to always make use of the most ideal locations and conditions. However, the surf lessons are generally held at the famous "Freights Bay" in the southern-most part of the island. Freights Bay (pictured above) is a world-class surf spot for beginners and intermediates due to the excellent easy going conditions, long gentle waves, and the chance to surf alongside the many turtles that inhabit the bay.
