Punta Roca, the crown jewel of El Salvador's right-hand point breaks, is a world-class wave was called a warm water Jeffery's Bay by many of the competitors of the recent ASP six-star reef pro El Salvador. Barrels, big open faces, air sections, and right from the drop all the speed you can handle. This rock bottom point break works on all tides but you pay to play at low tide.
Hot rocks, slippery rocks, and barnacle-encrusted rocks in that order greet you upon entering the water at a low tide. Those who chose to surf the midday session are usually rewarded with an uncrowded lineup. Respect for the locals is returned in kind. This is a spot for experienced surfers only. La Bocana, one of few lefts to be found in the country, is located right in front of Boca Olas in Playa El Tunco. This sand and rock bottom river mouth peak provides both right and left-handers. Bocana has many moods depending on the swell direction and generally is larger than the waves outside of El Tunco. The wave works on all tides but has the most punch on an incoming tide.
This wave is recommended for more experienced surfers. Bocana will max out on the bigger swells but is a great option on the small to medium sized days. Rarely crowded on the weekdays but weekend mornings packed with the cities weekend warriors.
La Bocanita which is located just to the west of Bocana can be a fun punchy beach break but tends to be the most fickle of all the waves in Playa El Tunco. It works best with a shorter interval swell and on a higher tide. When Bocanita is working, however, it offers barrels and air sections in the form of right and left-hand peaks. This is a favorite with the afternoons' local surfers. Bocanita is the best option for seeing some of El Salvador's most talented surfers do their thing up close because of how close the waves break to the shore.
El Sunzal is El Tunco's right-hand point. This wave caters to surfers of all experience levels. It is the unique place where you can see pros sharing waves with novice surfers. It is a long slopey wave perfect for perfecting your cutback. Big open faces are the norm here. However, because of the diversity of the demographic surfers in its waves, El Sunzal tends to be on the crowded side. Be careful on big days because El Sunzal can be deceptively inviting. A great wave for long-boarders and short-boarders alike.
El Zonte is another Salvadorian right-hand point located in a quaint little beach community that shares the same name. This point tends to be most fun on smaller days. This small little cove and point will generally max out at a few feet over head. This is a playful wave with many workable sections that normally is uncrowded.
El Zonte is tailormade for expression sessions. For proof, look no further than the talented bodyboarders that call El Zonte home and utilize this wave to its fullest potential. Friendly locals, mellow Central American beach town vibe and fun waves. What are you waiting for?
