Bassai Dai Yoga, Wushu, and Surf Camp invites you to this wonderful surf holiday in Costa Rica. Discover the benefits of Wushu combined with yoga to improve your performance on the board. Spend sometime exploring a pristine white sand beach in a wild nature environment and experience exceptional surfing, immerse in scenarios of point break, reef break, and beach break with an aligned body, mind, and heart.
During this holiday, you will stay either in a single or a shared room. Bassai Dai Yoga, Wushu, and Surf Camp offers jungle dorms named "Tekki" which are single beds or in the "Makiwara" which are double beds. The dormitories are lovingly constructed with reforested teak wood and have screen-windows, bathroom constructed with river rocks, ceiling fans, and lockers.
During this holiday, you will begin each day with an energizing Wushu or Yoga class followed by an exciting day of exceptional surfing, immerse in scenarios of point break, reef break and beach break with an aligned body, mind and heart. You are invited to spend sometime exploring this pristine white sand beach in a wild nature environment.
This level is designed for those who has never surfed before or had surfed a few times. During this level of instruction, you will focus on the basic part of the surfboard. You will cover all the safety tips including board control, how to fall of your board, the particular waves conditions for the day and how to deal with another local surfers. Next, you will learn the three-step pop-up technic along with four paddling disciplines. As a beginner student, you will never leave the whitewater.
This level of instruction is focused on give the students more freedom, control, and the understanding over how to catch their own waves with safety tips. You will be able to select you own waves, turn your board to catch the waves, and stand up and ride the waves by yourself.
Also, you will be able to work on turning and maneuvering your own surfboard once you are up and riding. You will be able also to practice duck-diving (how to move out pass the whitewater to the outside).
During this level of instruction, you will be able to paddle outside safety and efficiently. Once on the outside, you will be able to choose the right wave and sets coming in, position yourself to catch a wave, and riding to the end. When you arrive at the beach break, you will be able to surf alone.
The certified instructors are fully dedicated to teaching the art of surfing. They teach beyond basic techniques seeking to strengthen the skills of each student. Their individualized surf program will take you to the next level. They believe that both the practice of Wushu and yoga, will improve your learning ability of surfing.
The instructors are dedicated to a maximum of three students and they will give you the opportunity to work one-on-one with them to give you the attention that you deserve.
The instructors will teach you the basics of surfing, water safety, wave riding skills, and effective paddling techniques. All instructors are International Surfing Association (ISA) trained and certified. Many of their instructors are also certified lifeguards through the Royal Life Saving Society.
Yoga will help you to start the day with a deep breath. The practices will be in an environment of exuberant nature that will further enhance its beneficial effects.
At the dojo, built with teak wood and surrounded by wild flora and fauna, your classes will be spectacular. The spiritual space, naturally captures the essence of yoga and help you relax, restore and rejuvenate your body your mind and soul.
You will have the opportunity to learn Wushu-shaolin focused primarily on the origin of the "ten exercises of projection of legs". These exercises are a branch of the Chinese martial art, being part of a long tradition from the five sections of the Northern School. In ancient China, many are specialized in this martial art that is now widely practiced by Chinese and people from other countries.
These "ten exercises of projection of legs" are excellent for the flexibility of the torso, legs, and hands and to coordinate steps, all of which require strong technique, concentration of forces, and rhythmic movements of different body parts. These exercises are rhythmic, elegant, agile, energetic, and easy to assimilate. They can be run individually or in groups. With persistent practice, you can strengthen your health and improve your ability to jump.
As leg movements, hand, and torso require great flexibility, joints become more flexible and stronger. In addition, coordination movements requiring both hands, eyes, and torso. As for strength, energy, and spirit, it promotes the function of the central nervous system that controls the movements of the body organs.
Finally, continuous active practice impacts blood circulation by strengthening the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, and definitely improves performance surfing.
This retreat will be held at Bassai Dai Yoga, Wushu, and Surf Camp in Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica. Bassai Dai Yoga, Wushu, and Surf Camp is located at Nicoya Peninsula in the north of Malpaís, between Santa Teresa town and the Manzanillo fishing village.
Playa Hermosa means "beautiful beach" in English and is a wonderful place where you will find white sand and crystal clear waters surrounded by mountain forests, continuous surf beach brakes and point brakes, and naturally magnificent pedal basins for swimming and snorkeling.
It is also a quiet beach with few visitors where, besides of surfing, you can also experience spectacular beach walks, hikes, or you may take beautiful photographs or videos. There is a supermarket in Playa Hermosa and some small highly recommended restaurants within walking distance. Ten minutes away by car, you will find the village of Santa Teresa with all kinds of shops, numerous restaurants, coffee bars, and other surf brakes .

Please book your flight to arrive at Juan Santa María Airport (SJO) or Tambor Airport (TMU). You may take a 25-minute flight from San José (SJO) to Tambor Airport (TMU) in Peninsula de Nicoya. From Tambor Airport (TMU), Bassai Dai Yoga, Wushu, and Surf Camp will pick you up with a taxi which cost 75 USD plus taxes for one way trip.
There are daily buses going to Malpaís and Santa Teresa at 6:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. leaving from Nuevo Terminal and Transporte Cóbano in San José. You may buy the tickets as you enter the bus directly from the bus driver. The travel time is about six hours and the ticket price is about 12 USD. At the next to last bus stop Malpaís o Playa El Carmen, you will find cabs that will take you to Bassai Dai Yoga, Wushu, and Surf Camp for about 18 USD.
