Pilar De Miguel
Pilar has been practicing different styles of yoga for years, but in 2013, she discovered Ashtanga yoga and it changed her life. She instantly fell in love with the practice after experiencing how powerful and transformative it can be, as it becomes a meditation in movement. She completed several courses in India, in both Ashtanga and Vinyasa styles, and travels every year to Mysore to practice with her guru and teacher R. Sharath Jois. She has also studied with high profile teachers like David Williams, Rolf, and Marci Naujokat.

This retreat will take place in Bahia Ballena, Costa Rica. Bahia Ballena is a small town on the southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, within the canton of Osa, in the region known as Costa Ballena. Commonly referred to as part of Uvita, Bahia Ballena is located just 15 minutes south of the popular surf town of Dominical.

Bahia Ballena is a breath of fresh air for travelers looking to enjoy the natural beauty of the southern Pacific region, as well as the laid-back charm of a small, authentic Tico Town.

Bahia Ballena, which literally means “Whale Bay”, has its name for two reasons. The first reason is that at low tide, the sandbar on the north end of the Ballena Marine National Park beach forms into what from above looks like a giant whale’s tail.

The second reason is that Bahia Ballena’s location on the Pacific Ocean gives it a fairly stable water temperature year round, providing the perfect place for whales from both the north and south to give birth. For this reason, there is not one but two whale watching seasons in this lucky town, the major tourist attractions of the area.

Marino Ballena National Park

Created in 1989 to protect coral reefs and the visiting humpback whales, the park’s conservation area covers 110 land hectares and 5,385 ocean hectares, and is touted as being the first marine park in Central America.

It was listed by National Geographic Spain as one of ten best destinations in the world for whale and dolphin watching, and one of the most important habitats for humpback whales in the Pacific Ocean.

Needless to say, it is an incredibly special corner of the world to spend time, and an especially unique place to learn to surf!
