Your experience will be complete with the opportunity to taste local food and turn your holiday into an unforgettable experience.
The oceanfront suites at Balancé Yoga Center face the endless blue waters of the Pacific in the Salvadoran surf getaway, Playa El Tunco. You will listen to the waves break in front of the oceanfront deck as you swing in a soft hammock, enjoying the sanctuary of Balancé.
These luxurious, carefully designed suites are well-equipped to make your stay exceptional. Each has private bathrooms, comfortable sleeping accommodation for up to six adults, premium bedding and linens, dining table and chairs, walk-in closet, and television with surround sound stereo and DVD.
For couples and individuals, there are smaller waterfront luxury suites available. Purified drinking water throughout your stay is included as an extra thank you. Clean towels and quality linens are provided as needed. When you are ready for your practice, the beautiful yoga studio is only a few steps away.
During this retreat, you will enjoy two yoga classes per day and three surfing lessons. You will have the opportunity to practice Restorative yoga with props, slow Vinyasa Flow, which is a slower paced asana practice with foundational emphasis, and advanced Vinyasa, a faster-paced practice with option for advanced poses.
The surf in El Salvador is nothing short of world-class. Balancé Yoga Center has a great group of surf instructors that have more than 10 years of experience. Guys like Bamba, Pedro, Avión, and Juan Carlos are just a blast to be in the water with. You will remember their smiles, energy, and great attitudes forever.
Apart from great leadership and coaching skills, these guys are phenomenal surfers. They will have you surfing quickly, having fun, and improving for your next surf session. They will take you to nearby uncrowded beach breaks, where you will have the waves to yourself. There, you can practice and hone your skills before testing what you have learned at other famous point breaks.
This retreat includes two awesome trips. First, you will take a half-day and head up to the pristine waterfalls of Tamanique with a packed lunch. It is only a 25-minute drive from the beach, but you will be hiking so please bring good footwear. It takes about 30 minutes to hike down to the waterfalls from town.
On the way, let the locals regale you with stories of years living in a surf paradise. Then, dive into the cool pools and take a break from the tropical heat. You will be back in time for afternoon yoga or relax time before dinner.
The second trip is a full-day excursion to hike the Santa Ana Volcano, one of the most iconic volcanic craters in the world. While out there, you will stop in some of El Salvador’s coolest towns, where we can find the best coffee, good eats, and even some nice gifts for friends and family back home.
The Balancé Yoga studio is located in the amazing surf town Playa El Tunco. El Tunco has a style all its own, with numerous oceanfront restaurants, bars, and cantinas. Here, you will find delicious natural smoothies, cheap beer, and the freshest seafood imaginable.
El Tunco's sunsets are world class. During the busier seasons, you will find some of the world’s most active travelers sitting on the seawall, enjoying a cold beer, and watching the lineup of surfers getting their awesome on next to the iconic rock of Playa El Tunco. That rock splits the beach down the middle.
To the west, there is the world-class point break Sunzal. If you are a surfer, you have probably heard of it. On the opposite side of the beach, the east side, there is another amazing wave, La Bocana. Bocana is incredibly consistent and offers great shortboard waves while many people that surf at Sunzal tend to ride bigger longboards.
Each day, you will wake up to a gourmet spread with some of the world’s best coffee, fresh fruit, fresh baked bread, homemade nut milks, and detox drinks. A full breakfast is included each morning at the resort and Balancé Yoga Center will cater one gourmet lunch and one gourmet dinner at the retreat.
The main menu features local flavors and fresh-caught local seafood with an elegant touch. Special dietary needs can be accommodated, including vegan, vegetarian, or pescatarian diets and food allergies. Just let Balancé Yoga Center know what you need.
The chef, Mauro Bernal, was trained in Los Angeles but is native to El Salvador. His Midas-touch will bring joy to your palate. Mauro constantly surprises guests, transforming the simplest ingredients into edible works of art.
Healthy snacks, such as gourmet coffee, fresh fruit, salads, raw nut milks, smoothies, juiced drinks, and more are included during your retreat. Purified drinking water and fresh coconut water are also provided every day.
While the busy schedule of a yoga and surf retreat demands a private chef for the majority of meals, a special thing they do at Balancé is to include several meals out on the town. You will visit local staples like Mopelia, Take-a-Wok, La Ola Betos, Tunco Veloz, and Beach Life.
Playa El Tunco is known for its vibrant food and nightlife. No visit here is complete without checking out these great places. You will spend several evenings eating, drinking, dancing, having a great time with the local crew, and just having an authentic El Salvadoran experience.
El Tunco offers a wide range of activities for travelers, including surf lessons, guided surf trips, day trips and excursions, and board rentals. You can also book additional treatments during your stay.
During this retreat, you can book an additional dry needling treatment with Dr. Sarah Kernan. Chiropractors believe that interference with the body’s muscular, nervous, and skeletal systems impairs many vital body functions and lowers resistance to disease.
Chiropractic is a natural form of health care that uses spinal adjustments to correct these misalignments and restore proper function to the nervous system, helping your body to heal naturally. Chiropractic does not use drugs or surgery.
A chiropractic spinal adjustment is the application of a precise force to a specific part of the spinal segment. It corrects the misalignment, permitting normal nerve transmission and assisting your body to recuperate on its own.
Myofascial trigger point dry needling is a treatment used to restore proper function to abnormally behaving muscles. Nodules, or knots, and tight bands that develop in the muscle create localized pain or send pain signals to other locations. The affected muscles become locked and cannot function normally, which restricts movement and causes chronic pain.
Of the many treatment methods applied to painful muscles, none are quite as effective as dry needling. The muscle contracture releases to its normal length, circulation is improved, swelling is receded, and the pain-causing biochemicals disperse, eliminating their noxious effect on local nerves. Dry needling utilizes sterile, thin monofilament needles, and relief is often rapid with a reduction in pain and improved function.
You can also book private massage therapy sessions with Terri Street at Balancé Yoga Center or in the open tropical air, with the opportunity to request focus on certain trouble spots or total body rejuvenation.
Drive to the coastal port of La Libertad and head west towards Sonsonate. Eight kilometers up the road lies the coastal surf town of Playa El Tunco.
If you are staying at a hotel, hostel, or beach house in the El Tunco area, Balancé Yoga Center is just steps away. You can find the center at the main entrance to town, in front of the Catholic church Rosario de Fatima. It is the first driveway on the left-hand side after the yellow barrier where vehicles enter town. Look for the big sign with their name and logo and the chalkboard announcing the current schedule of yoga classes and activities.
You can also walk to the studio via the beach. Walk towards the La Bocana river mouth break and follow the path along the retaining wall and onto the east side of the river. You will see an obviously abandoned property and one next to it with a lovely garden and a nice oceanfront deck. That is Balancé Yoga Center. Come through the waterfront gate.
Please book your flight to arrive at El Salvador International Airport (SAL). Transfer from and to the airport is included. Balancé Yoga Center will pick you up from the airport.
If you are traveling by bus, take the 80 line east from La Libertad towards Majahual / Sunzal. You will see a large wooden sign with the names of several businesses in town and a blue sign indicating the entrance to El Tunco. Balancé Yoga Center's driveway is the third one on the left. Look for the big sign with their name and logo and the chalkboard announcing the current schedule of yoga classes and activities.
