Program

Many surf schools claim to be teaching in small and individual groups, which oftentimes is not the case. Atlantis Surf Hostel want to take a different approach and take individual teaching seriously. That’s why in their courses you won’t find more than five students in the water at the same time. You can count on individual feedback in order to maximize your learning success.

Surfing is a complex sport, which requires strength, endurance, and above all, coordination. In order to make progress quickly, you need personal supervision and control. Learning to surf with Atlantis Surf Hostel means learning individually and methodologically.

During the surf lessons, you’ll be four hours at the beach daily. Out of those four hours, two hours are intensive surf lessons with a lot of individual feedback. To prevent being out of energy right after the morning session, you’ll take a short lunch break at the beach. After that, you’ll have the chance to apply everything you’ve learned during the day on your own, but always under surveillance of the team, of course.

What you get during the surf lessons:

  • Proper execution of a functional standup technique
  • Instruction for beginners and advanced right in the water
  • The perfect board for your level with the possibility to try different shapes
  • Atlantis Surf Hostel will choose an adequate beach for your level (e.g. with easy entries and long white water rides)
  • Video and photo analysis to allow for optical feedback
  • Introduction into surfing theory

About the teaching methods: in general, all activities are done on softboards during the first three days. Your surf coach chooses the board that best suits your level and allows for the best possible learning progression.

Location

This surf camp will be held in Guía, Gran Canaria, Spain. Gran Canaria offers perfect conditions if you want to learn to surf. But also if you’re already an experienced surfer, you will find everything you were looking on the island: peaky beach breaks, which work all year round, and top class rock and reef breaks, which require skill and experience to master. Plus the surf spots are never far away. Due to its round shape, you will always a good spot depending on swell and wind direction.

The village of San Felipe

The former fisherman’s village clings to the north coast of Gran Canaria and is surrounded by banana plantations. Far away from the big city, you can easily relax while doing a walk to the marine pool or have dinner in one of the four restaurants nearby. Five minutes away from the hostel, you can work out at the outdoor gym.

There are two beautiful valleys with climbing rocks that invite you to meet Gran Canarias nature just 25 to 35 minutes away from the hostel. After walking for 1.5 hours, you will get to Canobio Valerón, the biggest archaeological excavation of Gran Canaria. A little bit hungry? Taste a unique delicacy: Queso de Flor from Santa Maria de Guia. You can go there by bus or car within 15 minutes.

The ancient caves in Galdar are very interesting and tell stories about the guanchen, the old natives.

Gran Canaria (the miniature continent)

Gran Canaria offers a vast amount of diverse landscapes, which only wait to be explored. Especially the north of the islands surprises with scenic views, jungle-like canyons, and spectacular ravines. The central highlands are dominated by conifers, above all the well known canary pine, which has adapted itself perfectly to the volcano landscape.

The special feature of Gran Canaria is that all the different zones lie very close together. Therefore, you usually pass several climatic zones on every trip, which shine with entirely distinct vegetation.

If you’ve got a rental car, you’ve got the possibility to visit the more isolated places, like the west coast with its natural reserve Tamadaba and the steep cliffs with its adventurous road winding along them all the way to La Aldea de San Nicolás. Further inland you’ll find idyllic towns every now and then, which invite for a break.

Food

In this camp, you'll take a break between surf lessons with a lunch snack at the beach (sandwich, juice, and cereal bar).

Restaurants

If you walk out of the camp and turn to the right, you find Los Pescaditos after about 500 meters on your right-hand side. The restaurant is known for its good, typical Canarian food and is also popular for its fish dishes. A little further down the road, you find the restaurant La Tasquita which has an idyllic courtyard. They have various typical Canarian dishes (fish and meat).

If you leave the camp to the left and follow the road out of San Felipe, you find after a 15-minute walk a restaurant called El Paso which is next to the sea pool. There you can also enjoy Spanish cuisine.

In San Andres, which is 40 minutes walk from the camp and about 8 minutes by car going into the direction to Las Palmas, there are two pizzerias.
