Best season for surfing in Zanzibar is June to October. The swells are more consistent and better spots are working. From December to March we get mainly wind swells. Ground swells and good surf mainly starts to come through in a short period between middle of January and middle of March. For beginners the spots are great throughout the whole season and learning conditions are perfect in Zanzibar.
This retreat will take place in Zanzibar. The reef in Zanzibar is not as gnarly as some other tropical islands surfing spots. It is generally flat and rocky. Many sea urchins can be found in some surf spots (spikey crustaceans). However, Aquaholics Zanzibar's beginner friendly spot is almost urchin free. Dolphins and turtles are seen regularly along the coastline and often join you for a surf session.
Zanzibar is quite chancy for waves, so the knowledge of where to go is an essential. The swell, wind direction, tides, and moon faze are vital in getting any form of decent wave to surf. Some different sections on the reef break with different conditions are really worth a boat trip.
Aquaholics Zanzibar has found a beginner friendly surf spot on the reef with smaller waves for beginners and intermediate surfers. This spot is great for learning as you can stand up with only sand, flat rocks, and seagrass beneath you. This wave is incredibly beautiful and breaks perfectly to get your first open face wave riding under the belt.
Jams is the inside section of a bigger break called Doughnuts and works especially well on the easterly swell. This spot is still a beginner to intermediate wave but offers a great wedgy take off into a soft open face shoulder with about a 30-meter ride. Generally, intermediate surfers enjoy Jams because it tends to be a bit rockier and has more current. On small days, surf lessons take place here.
Dongwe Doughnuts is the outside section of Jams and Tamarins, where bigger sets break for more advanced surfers. This wave walls up, races down the reef, and offers great technical surfing with more power than other spots along the reef.
Vacanze is a spot in Dongwe south of the pass near Dongwe Doughnuts. This section of the reef picks up bigger swell and breaks over shallower banks. The bottom is flat and urchin free. On a right day, this spot can handle over head waves with great surfing potential. If the swell drops below a meter, Aquaholics Zanzibar can always find a surfable wave for beginners here.
Shenanigens is Aquaholics Zanzibar's newest discovery. It is a fun right-hand wave that is ideal for beginners on small days and offers lots of fun for more experienced surfers. You can still have a playful session even on a windy day.
J-Box is the longest wave that has been found so far and it can be found on the outer reefs of Jambiani. This spot handles bigger swells but only works on the lowest tides. In June - October season, especially around July, this wave starts to work.
South pass is a wave that breaks over an extremely shallow reef and causes a slabby bowl-like effect on the take-off section. It then softens onto a mellow section before rebuilding on the inside reef to a great running section of the wave. The spot is further south of J-Box on the outer reefs.
Daily Breakfast is served at Ocean Restaurant, which is right at the beach a short 100 meters walk from your room. This continental Breakfast is served between eight AM to ten AM. There is an option to ask for early breakfast (on request only), or to get a packed breakfast in case you plan a trip.
