Tamarindo is a fascinating beach town in Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. Over the years, it has gained its well-deserved name as a surfers’ mecca, so expect to have a real blast on Tamarindo surf camps. As with other areas in Costa Rica, there are plenty of eco-friendly activities to indulge in. From horseback riding to turtle nesting tours or snorkeling, the options are endless! We bet you’ll love every moment of it! Book your Tamarindo surf holiday today and prepare to enjoy a consistent swell!
The best time to surf in Tamarindo is from April to October when the offshore winds pick up for a perfect SW groundswell with waves from 1-3 meters (3-10 ft). Even though these months are not the most popular months in Guanacaste as it receives more rain, it’s the perfect season to surf. The large crowds have left and the waves have picked up.
Nevertheless, you can surf perfectly in the dry and popular summer season as well. Especially good for beginning surfers, the months between December and March have great consistent waves of around 1 meter (3-4 ft) almost every day. Because of its high water temperature year-round (26-28 C), there’s no need for a wetsuit and you can wear bikinis or boardshorts anytime! Catch your waves in the morning with offshore wind. In the afternoon there’s a less ideal onshore wind.
One of the most well-known surf spots in Tamarindo is The River Mouth (El Estero), best suited for experienced surfers. Also, Casitas, named after the small houses on the beach, is a great surf spot for beginners and advanced surfers.
In Tamarindo, just like everywhere in Guanacaste, you’ll find a great variety of American food chains because of its convenient location close to the airport. If you’re into a more healthy lifestyle, there’s also plenty of local food to be found. Search for local Casados (rice, beans, and fish dish) or tacos in the small lunch rooms around. However, the Tamarindo nightlife is known for its local surfer's vibe. Ask around at the large hostels who are throwing parties whenever they can and have the true Tamarindo surf experience.
