Surfers from all over the world come to Jaco for a dose of its fun waves. With more than 15 surf breaks, there’s something for all surf levels. The vibrant town of Jaco is also known as the mecca of surfing in Costa Rica, a great destination for your surf camp.
The major swell season and the best time to surf in Jaco Beach is from April to October with S-SW swells. Jaco is located on the western coast across the Nicoya Peninsula, which is creating pointbreaks, and consistent waves at lower tides. Because of this good location, there’s an ocean breeze keeping surfers cool the entire year. The warmest and sunny days of the year are expected between November and Mid-April. Although there’s always a fair share of humidity in Costa Rica throughout the year, November to April are the driest months, with clear blue skies, cool nights, lush greenery, and a cool offshore wind.
Between April and August, there’s a period where you can expect some more rain showers, in the nights mostly. Because of its major swell, the fewer crowds, and the offseason prices, this period is ideal to explore the country on a lower budget and have great surf conditions at the same time. The Green, or Rain, Season can be expected in September and October. During these two months, the jungle thankfully receives its much-needed share of rain. Because of its high water temperature year-round (26-28 C), there’s no need for a wetsuit and you can wear bikinis or boardshorts anytime!
Jaco has stunning coastlines, prime wave conditions, and consistent swell with many surf spots on a 20-minute distance of the Northern coast. The waves up north brake bigger and make for better surf conditions. Also, explore the beaches south of Jaco to e.g. find the unexplored Pavones beach, where you’ll be one of the few surfers.
Jaco has a good combination of international and local restaurants and nightlife, without giving in on wave quality. The town is known for its Strip (Pastor Diaz Avenue) filled with international and local restaurants and bars. There’s something for everyone, ranging from grill restaurants, tacos, or good coffee. Because of its many American tourists, you’ll find all the big food chains here as well. Also for Jaco’s nightlife, you need to visit the main city Strip, Pastor Diaz Avenue. Here you’ll find a wide variety of bars and clubs, from cocktail bars to Irish pubs, where you can spend drinking and dancing all night long.
