A province on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, Guanacaste is a true surfing gem. Guanacaste has stunning nature parks, prime wave conditions, and plenty of party towns. Tamarindo, the main town in Guanacaste, offers strong surf and there are many hotspots for a well-deserved after surf ‘cerveza’. Guanacaste offers a variety of waves to suit all levels, an ideal climate all year round, hip nightlife, remote beaches.
The best time to surf in Guanacaste is from April to October, when the offshore winds pick up and there’s a perfect SW groundswell giving you bigger waves from 1-3 meters (3-10 ft). Although this period receives more rain, the crowds have disappeared and waves have picked up. In the dry and popular summer season from December to March, it’s the perfect time to surf for beginners, with consistent waves around 1 meter (3-4 ft) almost every day.
The best timing to surf during the day in Guanacaste is during the morning, when there’s offshore wind, compared to the afternoons with an onshore wind. Because of its high water temperature year-round (26-28 C), there’s no need for a wetsuit and you can wear bikinis or boardshorts anytime!
In Guanacaste, there are three main nightlife areas to visit. In Tamarindo, you’ll discover the surfer’s vibe in the large hostels around, throwing parties whenever they can. The northern beaches of Playa del Coco and Playa Hermosa never sleep, with American bars (e.g. the Hard Rock Cafe) open till early in the morning. Because of its convenient location close to the airport, you’ll find plenty of American food chains in the area. Obviously, you’ll still be able to find your local Casados (rice, beans, and fish dish) or tacos in the small lunch rooms around, but expect to be overwhelmed with North American classics. When you're more into trekking into nature, visit the Nosara and Santa Rosa national parks, home to the Howler Monkeys.
