Brazil is best known for its carnival and the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. But not a lot of people know that Brazil also offers some of the best surf spots just outside of Rio. 42 of them are located on the island of Florianopolis alone, not to mention the countless surf spots and pristine beaches nearby on the continent. Visit tropical islands, picturesque bays and coasts, and practice your favorite water sports. What are you waiting for? Reserve your spot on a Brazil surf trip today!
Want to ride waves with the sun on your back and samba rhythms in the air? Can’t wait to catch your first wave on a tropical beach? Or maybe you’re craving an adventure with salt in your hair, sand between your toes, and days spent in the ocean?
If any of these hit home, it might be time to book a Surf Camp in Brazil!
A surfing experience is more than just about learning to pop on the board or improving your skills. It’s an immersive journey in the surf culture, where your days revolve around catching waves, and evenings are spent with your new friends who share the same passion.
And why Brazil? The coastline stretches for thousands of kilometers, with every kind of wave you can imagine. From mellow beach breaks to punchy reef spots and world-class barrels, Brazil delivers them all! The laid-back vibe through every coastal town means it’s easy to fall into the rhythm of surf, eat, sleep, repeat. Plus, the warm Atlantic waters mean you can surf in shorts or a bikini almost year-round!
But what Brazil offers is far more than the waves. It’s the sunrise over misty hills and the dancing barefoot in the sand as the sun goes down and the music turns up. Every surfing hot spot here has its own character, inviting you to connect with nature and soak in the vibes. And to top all of that, they also have some of the most passionate surf instructors around, quality coaching, and an incredible local culture - these are the ingredients of a truly unforgettable surf trip.
What are you waiting for? Trade your daily routine for tropical sun and good vines on a Surf Camp in Brazil!
At a Surf Camp in Brazil, expect to wake up greeted by the sound of the crashing waves and the scent of strong coffee. Your mornings will kick off with a warmup, followed by a surf lesson.
Depending on the package, you might do some sunrise yoga to get your body ready for physical exercise or end the day with yoga to relax your muscles. Often, you’ll be given a video feedback to help you improve your technique and theory classes that teach you to read the ocean.
On a Surf Holiday in Brazil, accommodation ranges from budget-friendly guesthouses to surf houses, beachfront lodges, and hotels, often located close to surfing spots, bars, and restaurants. And when it comes to food, most camps include at least a fresh breakfast. For the rest of the meals, explore the nearby eateries and dig into fresh fish, hearty stews, and tropical fruits.
Looking for recommendations on where to go for an exciting surf experience in Brazil?
In southern Brazil, Florianópolis, affectionately known as “Floripa”, is a mecca for surfers, with more than 40 beaches scattered across the island. Praia Mole is a favorite for its consistent waves and surf-friendly crowd, while Barra da Lagoa is a go-to spot for beginners. When you aren’t catching waves, you can enjoy the buzzing nightlife, hike the lush trails, or visit landmarks, such as Fortaleza de Santo Antônio de Ratones or the Santa Catarina History Museum.
Farther north, Itacaré is a laid-back town in Bahia with warm waters, mellow point breaks, and surrounding rainforest. The pace here is slower and the waves are great if you want to build confidence or progress your technique.
Not far from Rio de Janeiro, Saquarema has earned its title as Brazil’s surf capital. The surf here is powerful and consistent and is home to the World Surf League's 2024 Corona Saquarema Pro surf competition each year. If you’re an intermediate or advanced surfer looking to push your limits, this spot is a great choice. But even if you’re new to surfing, nearby beaches offer more manageable waves.
Pipa, located next to the city of Natal, in Rio Grande do Norte, has a small-town charm paired with solid swells and breathtaking landscapes. Praia de Amor, the main surf soft, gets steady action and is perfect for everyone, regardless of skill level. When you aren’t in the water, relax with a coffee or a caipirinha or two at the beach bars.
Fernando de Noronha, an archipelago off the coast of Brazil, is a bucket-list destination with gorgeous beaches, untouched nature, and great waves for surfing. But note that this is not a place for first-timers. The surrounding deep water and the lack of continental shelf mean the swells hit with power and speed, rewarding experienced surfers with great conditions.
Lastly, there’s Praia da Rosa, where surf breaks offer something for all levels. The surrounding dramatic cliffs and the local vibe offer a perfect mix of nature and surf culture.
As for when to go, Brazil is a great surfing destination year-round. The southern region, including Florianópolis and Praia da Rosa, is best between April and September when swells are most reliable. In the northeast, Itacaré, Pipa, or Noronha, the ideal time is from October to March.
