Surfing in Spain: What You Need to Know

Spain is for you if:

  • You want to surf every type of wave imaginable
  • You wish to tackle some of Europe’s best waves
  • You are looking for a year-round surfing destination
  • Why go surfing in Spain?

Surfing has been a part of Spain’s culture ever since the 1960s, and there’s no shortage of world- class surf breaks to suit every level of surfer. You will find some of the best surf spots in Europe here, a warm and pleasant climate, and excellent surfing conditions all year round.

Is Spain a good place to learn to surf?

During summer months, beginners will find plenty of fun and manageable waves, and the coasts of both mainland Spain and the Canary Islands are dotted with surf towns, schools, and facilities. During winter months, mainland Spain is hit by the full force of the Atlantic, which means big and powerful waves.

Where should you go if you are a beginner surfer?

In the Basque Country, Zarautz is Spain’s surfing capital, with plenty of surf schools and gentle beach breaks for first-timers. If you want to learn to surf on some of Europe’s best waves, go to Playa de Somo in Cantabria and Playa de Razo in Galicia. If you’re looking for warmer water, the Canary Islands is a great choice.

Where should you go if you are an intermediate surfer?

If you want to take things up a notch, check out the breaks at Sopelana in the Basque Country, the powerful reef break at Isla de Santa Marina and the hollow beach break at El Brusco in Cantabria. Ride the barreling waves at Playa de las Americas in Tenerife and Los Lobos in Fuerteventura, the longest wave in the Canary Islands.

Where should you go if you are an advanced surfer?

The powerful waves at Meñakoz and Mundaka in the Basque Country need no introduction, nor do the heavy waves at Roca Puta near Zarautz and the hollow rivermouth break at Playa de Rodiles in Asturias. Witness the strength of The Spanish Left in Tenerife, The Bubble in Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote’s Morro Negro.
