The small town of Zarautz is a surfer’s heaven! Known as the surf capital of Spain, Zarautz offers lots of surf camps and great surfer's parties. It’s home to many of Spain’s champions and it’s a great place to learn how to surf or just hone your skills. The big sandy bottom beach of Zarautz is for everyone, with multiple peaks perfect for both beginners and pros and some of Spain's best surf spots.
Zarautz is the longest beach in the Spanish Basque Country, with some of the best surfing spots in Europe. Mundaka is the famous barreling wave only 90 min. away from Zarautz, where you can watch and learn from the pros.
The best time to surf in Zarautz is in autumn. Between September and May the surf conditions are perfect for the intermediate and advanced surfers, with good swell and fewer crowds. Especially in winter, the pros take a chance on the wild Basque waves. Take in mind that the water can be extremely cold during these months, especially in January and February.
The summer months are great for beginning surfers, as waves are rather small and less strong. Although the beaches are crowded in July and August, the weather is warm and there’s plenty of additional activities in the surrounding cities, like San Sebastian.
Explore the culture around: visit Bilbao and its famous Guggenheim Museum, or discover student city San Sebastian. Zarautz has a great nightlife and with many bars around, you’ll have the option to look back on your surf session with a cold local beer and a great atmosphere. When you’re around between July 7th and 14th, make sure to visit Spain’s biggest street party, the Fiesta San Fermin with the famous Running of the Bulls in the nearby city of Pamplona. Another great option is to visit San Sebastian, a student city with plenty of bars, as there’s a great connection between the two cities. Whenever you are in Zarautz, there’s no way of getting around without trying Pinchos. These typical Basque tapas are a must-try! For only €2.00 you can easily have a ‘Pinchos e pote’ - a snack and a drink. Find the local places for the most authentic experience and enjoy this perfect bite after a good surf.
