Cantabria is an autonomous community on the strong northern coastline of Spain. With strong winds and good surf, surfing conditions are pretty constant and the waves can get quite big in certain areas. Although surfers often think the surf if only for experienced surfers, the region also caters to beginners! Surf Camps in Cantabria are quite undiscovered by the large surf crowds, as the number of surfers per km is much smaller than in the Basque Country.
Cantabria is known for its beach breaks and sheltered surf areas that make it a great spot in autumn and winter. The region has over 27 surf spots, such as Liencres and Los Locos (beginners) and El Brusco and Isla Santa Marina (experienced surfers only).
The best time to surf in Cantabria is through the autumn to winter months. Compared to the Basque Country, the landscape is less abrupt, giving you a smaller number of quality reef breaks. The beach breaks on the other hand are of great quality and completely make up for this. The big winter swells are therefore too strong for this landscape and make surfers appreciate the small to medium swells more in this area.
Explore the capital city of Cantabria in a city trip, famous for its gothic churches, fine restaurants, and relaxed atmosphere. Most of Cantabria’s nightlife is also to be found here. In the two main streets, Calle de Santa Lucía and Calle del Río de la Pila, you’ll find several local pubs, fine restaurants, jazz cafes, and cocktail bars. Looking for a dancing spot? Visit Rocambole with a diverse crowd and a good DJ mix. Cantabria is also known for its heavy and meaty dishes, as locals don’t always prefer delicate high cuisine. Think bean soups and sausage plates. Typical for the region is also the sweet ‘sobao pasiego’ cakes, drenched in a local anise liqueur.
