Spain’s Canary Islands are a prime surfing destination in Europe. With good surf spots in Lanzarote, Tenerife, and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands are great for all surf levels. Also known as the Hawaii of Europe, the Canary Islands have even more days of sunshine a year.
The main surf spots are located between the islands Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and Lanzarote. The top 5 spots for beginners are El Cotillo, Rocky Point, La Cicer, El Arenal, and Famara.
The best time to surf in the Canary Islands is all year long with great surf conditions, especially for beginners! The Canary Islands have beautiful weather, warm water temperatures, and great swell year-round. With a water temperature between 18-25Cº, it’s possible to surf throughout the year. The waves start to get stronger during the winter months, from September to April, and this is also the best surf season for intermediate and advanced surfers. With its peak between December and March, the big winter swells from the Atlantic Ocean hit the islands, creating ideal surf conditions.
Don’t leave the Canary Islands without trying its local sauce, handmade Mojo, that is placed on most dishes in local restaurants and markets. Being quite spicy and bright orange, this sauce is made out of garlic, olive oil, red or green pepper, cumin, salt and vinegar - perfect for the hot weather on the islands! The four largest Canary islands have plenty of nightlife in their capitals: from cocktail bars to nightclubs, from beach clubs to local pubs. While Tenerife and Gran Canaria are known for their excessive nightlife, the bars in Corralejo, Fuerteventura are more catered for the surfers on the island and have a relaxed vibe.
