Asturias is a gorgeous province that has both mountains and coastline and is known as one of the best surf regions in Spain. To catch the best waves, you’ll need to come here in the fall, winter, or spring. The mountains in Asturias run close to the coast, creating a beautiful rugged coastline and sharp cliffs. Asturias has more than 27 surf spots, of which some of the best are Navia (beginners) and Playa de Rodiles (a left-hander for experienced surfers), El Mongol (right-hander), and the solid beach breaks of Tapia. In Asturias, crowds are not a major factor, as the surf is concentrated in just a few spots in Salinas, Gijon, and Tapia.
The best time to surf in Asturias is during spring, and especially autumn, with very consistent surf conditions. The summers (June to September) have long and flat spells, creating overcrowded surf spots, while in the autumn months, the swells are consistent and yet not too strong. In the winter months, the consistency is good as well, but take in mind the water and air temperature can be extremely cold.
With a traditional background in farming, the Asturians have a good taste for their seafood, local ciders, and dozen of traditional cheeses. Make sure to try one of the local ciders poured by an expert server, the escanciador, tilting the bottle above the head and glass below the waste. A unique experience! The nightlife in Astoria, and its larger cities like Oviedo, is traditionally Spanish. Experience the local bars and pubs by acting like the Spaniards do: relaxing and talking with a glass of wine, coffee, or local cider.
