Peniche is such a great surf spot that has been called the surf capital of Portugal. Being a small peninsula, there a surf spots on both sides of Peniche. Peniche is also the place to be for watching pros doing their slick tricks during the many competitions, happening mostly around October. With such wave varieties, it’s no wonder that Peniche is such a popular surf camp destination!
All surf levels are represented in great surf spots. From the surf spots for pros like Supertubos, to spots for experienced surfers, like Molhe Leste, Consolacao. For beginners there's also plenty of spots to be found, like Cantinho da Baia and Praia do Pisao.
With its fairly good and regular SW-NW swells, Peniche has great and consistent surf conditions all year long. Being centered between the dry Algarve and the damp regions north of Porto, Peniche has a perfect warm summer with a cool Nortada (north winds). In the winter, waves can reach heights of 8-15 ft (3-5 meters), while in summer the waves range between 4-6 ft (1.5-2 meters). Because of its year-round cold water temperature, it’s recommended to wear a wetsuit at any time. In summer, a 2/2 or a 3/2 might do, while in mid-winter a 4/3 and boots are recommended.
Peniche is a traditional fishing village, known for bringing in the fresh catch of the day. In the nights, fishermen from around the world bargain for the best fish on Portugal’s largest fish market in the Peniche harbor. The traditional Portuguese kitchen is found in most places, and seafood is what chefs know best. Peniche’s harbor street Avenida do Mar has around 20 restaurants with (touristic) Portuguese cuisine, Italian pizza, or Japanese sushi. Discover the nightlife of Peniche with its beach bars, nightclubs, and plenty of parties. Although Ericeira is mostly known for its great parties, the nightlife in Peniche is also known for guiltily ruining morning surf sessions every day. Cheap shots, happy hour cocktails, and plenty of bars with sunset electro parties. Most surf camps host their own parties and evenings, making it even unnecessary to head into town sometimes.
