Ericeira is considered Portugal’s surfing capital with championships and surf breaks for all levels. Ericeira is also the first World Surfing Reserve in Europe. Ericeira offers surf breaks for all levels. Try out the surf spots Foz do Lizandro and Seo Juliao when you're a beginner, or Coxos and Pedra Branca when you're an experienced surfer. For the intermediate surfers, the spot Ribeira D’Ilhas is recommended. This consistent right-hander is easily accessible from the beach and easy to watch from the beach club.
For those who are after some adrenaline and deep barrels, the best time to go surfing is from October to March. Ericeira is a popular surfing destination, especially off-season when the large crowds disappear and the waves become stronger. In the summer months, from April to September, the waves are fun and perfect for a surf camp full of beginner waves and long party nights.
During the long and warm summer nights, the city center of Ericeira comes to life. Crowded with the surfers' community and the Lisbon weekend refugees, everyone loves to enjoy Ericeira’s live music, beach bars, cozy neighborhood pubs, and discos until early in the morning. Places not to miss while you there are Ouriço, one of Portugal’s oldest discos, and post-surf bar Tubo with live music and long evenings with beers on the street. Being a traditional fishing village north of Lisbon, this town is also known for its fresh seafood. Try Portugal’s traditional seafood dish, Bacalhau, being dried and salted cod and a special dish you must learn to love. Also, make sure to eat at least once in a ‘Marisqueira’, a traditional seafood restaurant you’ll find close to the seaside. For some delicious and traditional Portuguese pastries, take a 15 minute trip from Ericeira to Mafra.
