The Algarve is the sunniest part of Portugal, with many old fishing villages and scenic cliffs. Surfing in the Algarve is perfect thanks to the awesome weather, fabulous landscapes, and great surfing conditions because of its two coastlines. Being one of the favorite spots among surfers is Sagres, the meeting point for good western and southern waves. Having a south ánd west-facing coastline offers a wide variety of beaches and high surf consistency. Go ahead, try the surf in Algarve and embrace the true adventure!
The Algarve is perfect for beginners and advanced surfers with more than 53 surf spots. Surfing here is even better in winter. Famous spots for pros only are Carriagem and Lage do Pescador. Good spots for all surfers are e.g. Tonel, Zavial, Mareta, Albufeira, Arrifana Beach, Amado Beach, and Beliche Beach.
Known as the most consistent swell of Europe, the Algarve offers great waves on both sides of its coastline. Especially the small and lively town of Sagres has become a true surfers hub being located on the corner where both the west and south coast swells meet, and the potential for good and uncrowded waves is high. Despite its consistent waves, the winds around Cape St. Vincent are unpredictable. Nevertheless, in general, the Algarve is known for its NE to SE offshores, making perfect surf conditions in summer and winter.
The best time to surf in the Algarve is all year long, where better surf conditions for beginners are found in summer, and the more challenging waves (up to 15ft - 5 meters) are experienced in winter. Oh, and it never gets really cold in winter, making camping still possible during the winter months. How good is that?!
Simplicity and fresh products are the basics of the Portuguese great cuisine. When you’re taking your car or scooter around, you’ll come across small tavernas and restaurants offering the local traditional treat: simple grilled sardines, drizzled in olive oil and lemon juice. It’s not only the sardines that are a local favorite, as all seafood is prepared fresh and deliciously. Try for example the seafood dishes Cataplana de Marisco or Conquilhas à Algarvia to get a taste of all things great Algarve has to offer. Just like its neighboring country are small bites and wines before dinner a common part of the meal. Don’t be surprised to get a bowl of olives, bread, or a selection of cheeses (e.g. Queijo) on the table with a wine jar.
While most know the Algarvian nightlife for its party paradise Albufeira, there’s more to discover on its long stretching coastline. Dotted around the coast, you’ll find fancy beach bars, cocktail bars, and surf shacks anywhere from Faro to Sagres offering a diversity of live music, clubbings, and relaxing sunsets.
