Have you ever dreamt of the perfect surf destination? If so, then we invite you to embark on a surf trip in Sri Lanka. We’ll have you know that Sri Lanka is an incredible place to spend your surfing adventure. First-class waves, a rich cultural heritage, tropical forests, many beaches, and breathtaking landscapes are all on offer here. With two opposing coastlines, totaling 1,340 km (833 mi), it’s possible to surf all year round. Enjoy a safe, yet affordable Sri Lanka surfing holidays, with unlimited access to quality waves.

The best surf regions in Sri Lanka:

The south-west coast is home to some of the most popular surfing spots on the island: Gallé, Lazy Left (Midigama), Matara, North Jetty (Hikkaduwa), Unawatuna Bay and Weligama. On the south-east coast, Arugam Bay is the mecca of surfing in Sri Lanka, hosting annual international surfing competitions. Bennys is a spot for experienced surfers: very shallow with a reef surface. When the waves are big, this is one of the best spots in the country!

  • Arugam Bay: this Sri Lankan surf mecca in the south is an international surf destination with waves perfect for all levels of surfers!
  • Weligama: located on the south-west coast with a great reef break, Weligama is a great spot for beginners and is especially good for longboards.
  • Unawatuna: the bay has a shallow sand break and there is a left-hand reef break for more advanced surfers called Dalawella Reef surf Point and is a 150m-short ride.
  • Matara: on the south-west coast is suited to all types of surfers. Find its best waves in February and stay for the sunset, which is especially beautiful at this spot.

What's the best time to go surfing in Sri Lanka?

With a contrasting western and eastern side, this teardrop-shaped island has two seasons perfect for surfing. On the southwest side around Galle, you’ll find quality mellow waves from November to March. From April to October the more consistent swell takes over in the east. Depending on where you are, sea temperatures remain steady at about 27ºC, so you can surf in Sri Lanka all year long!

Why choose Sri Lanka as your next surfing destination?

Besides being a year-round surfing destination on both the western and eastern coast, another great advantage of surfing in Sri Lanka is that the living expenses and surf classes are relatively cheap and there’s plenty of cultures to explore once outside the water. Sri Lanka is a Buddhist mecca with impeccable nature. The vibe is very laid-back and friendly and therefore fits perfectly in the surfer's vibe. Especially for beginning surfers, Sri Lanka is a great place. Here you’ll find a consistent swell and calm monsoon on the east side of the island. But also for intermediates, there’s plenty of breaks: look for spots around surf mecca Arugam Bay, where there are small yet perfect right-hand peelers.

What's the nightlife like in Sri Lanka?

The nightlife in Sri Lanka is different than that found in Thailand or Bali, as it’s relaxed and mellow, and usually shut down out of season. You’ll find a few spots in Colombo’s resorts, dorm rooms, and hostels to party, but the amount is scarce. In the southern tip of the island, around Arugam Bay on the east coast, and Hikkaduwa on the west, the surfing communities usually bring more life to the beaches, but still expect it to be more relaxed. Find some of the best beach bars in Hikkaduwa, like Harbour Cafe and Funky de Bar where you’ll find great cocktails, a good vibe, delicious seafood, and a party every night!
