    What's the best time to go surfing in Indonesia?

    With its hot and tropical weather and thousands of islands, Indonesia is a true surfer’s paradise. The warm and shifting ocean currents make Indonesia great for year-round surfing. The most popular surf season in Indonesia is the dry season (April to October), with swells up to 4 meters in Sumatra or Bali. July seems the best month during this season with blue skies, sunshine most days, and offshore wind on the west coast. The dry season is also perfect for combining your surfing trip with outdoor activities and island exploration. Nevertheless, this is also the busiest and most touristic season, especially in Bali.

    Surfing during the wet season in Indonesia is just as good, as there’s not much difference between the two seasons in terms of surfing. Although known as the ‘off-season’, the wet season (November to March) is better for advanced surfers with a stronger ocean, fewer crowds, and ‘right-hander’ waves. The major difference between the seasons is in the wind and swell patterns, giving you better surf conditions in Eastern surf spots. Nevertheless, there are greater chances of flooding during the wet season, which makes it sometimes harder to reach secluded surf spots on the islands.

    • Bali: popular surf island Bali is known for its world-class spots as Uluwatu, Balangan, Canggu, and Balian.
    • Mentawai Islands: with 33 reef-coral surf spots, the Mentawais offer choices for the best charter trips for experienced surfers.
    • Lombok (island): with a good mix of ‘rights’ and ‘lefties’, Lombok is a great option to avoid the Bali crowds for both beginners and experienced surfers.
    • Canggu, Bali: this reef break surf spot on Bali is well-known for its fast lefts and especially popular in the morning.
    • Sumatra (island): with 4m-high swells in the dry season and ideal offshore winds, (the south of) Sumatra is a surfers paradise for intermediate and advanced surfers.
    • Padang Padang, Bali: ,or Bali Pipeline, is a surf spot for pro or kamikaze surfers only, with rips and undertows.
    • Uluwatu, Bali: is the most famous wave of Bali for experienced surfers, with different tides as ‘The Peak’, ‘Temple’, and the ‘Inside Corner’.
