Uluwatu is the most famous wave in Bali for experienced surfers and known as one of the best surf spots in the world with its unique central location with 3 coastal directions. This advanced swell attracts international pro surfers for fun and competitions, with different tides as The Peak, Temple, Outside Corner, and Inside Corner. Outside Corner in Uluwatu is considered one of the best waves in the world, which doesn’t break unless the swell is at least 8’ of the ranch. The name Uluwatu stands for Top of the Rock, where ‘Ulu’ means the ‘top’ and ‘watu’ means ‘rock’ in Balinese. You’ll find the beautiful temple here.
The best time to surf in Uluwatu is definitely during the Dry Season, between April and October. Because of its worldwide popularity, ‘Ulu’ tends to get crowded easily when the swell is in the 2-5 ft (0-1.5 meters), and this continues as it builds up to anywhere between 3-10 ft (1-3 meters). Regardless, the crowds are pretty spread out between Temples and the Peak, so there’s not much of a worry.
When in Uluwatu you must visit the beach bar Single Fin, a trendy bar located on the cliff overlooking one of the world’s most famous surf breaks. Single Fin attracts hip crowds, DJs, and live bands every night of the week. Grab a cold beer or cocktail, enjoy the sunset. The Sunday sunset party at Single Fin gives you one of the best sunsets of the island, whereafter a great night out starts. Just like everywhere else in Bali, the cafe culture and fine dining took over on the Bukit Peninsula, including Uluwatu. Expect to find trendy food hotspots like Single Fin, Bondi Grill’e, and Coco & Poke, as well as traditional warungs serving Indonesian classics.
