Portugal’s unofficial surfing capital, Ericeira is home to some of the best waves in the country and in Europe. It’s also the continent’s first and, so far, only World Surfing Reserve, which protects the outstanding density of world-class waves north of town and the rich biodiversity around them.
The gnarly waves within the World Surfing Reserve are the place to go for pro surfers. The world-class reef and point breaks north of town have a reputation for being heavy, fast, hollow, and powerful.
São Lourenço, the most northerly surf break in Ericeira, is one of Portugal’s biggest waves. Coxos is considered the best wave in the country and one of the best right-handers in the world. Crazy Left throws some rad barrels, while Cave is the heaviest wave in Portugal. Ribeira D’Ilhas is one of the best rights in Europe, offering some long rides, and Pedra Branca is famous for its wide and fast tubes.
Having hosted numerous championships and with booming surf culture, Ericeira is home to the biggest and strongest surfing community in Portugal.
Throughout the years, it managed to remain a traditional Portuguese fishing town, preserving its authentic charm, with cobblestone streets and whitewashed houses. Dotted with surf camps and surf-related businesses, Ericeira exhales chill surf vibes at every corner.
While the nightlife isn’t as wild as in Lisbon, it is lively nonetheless, with plenty of restaurants, bars, and clubs to have a good time after sunset.
While Ericeira is renowned for its year-round consistency, the best time to go for experienced surfers is between October and March. During this time of year, you can expect epic overhead conditions, powerful swells, and insanely hollow tubes.
