Portugal has been long known as a Mecca for watersports. This is due to the fact that it has an immense coastline, with high cliffs and stunning beaches. In Portugal, kiters can enjoy consistent wind all summer with world-class surf conditions all year around. The crystal clear warm water with constant strong wind is the ultimate for kitesurfing. You will be offered an easy and safe environment to practice the rides and your kite-looping moves.
Airport transfer available:
Faro Airport (US$94 per person)
You will stay at Kite House Lagos which features a pool, barbeque area, a big garden with trampolines, and outside multi-sport courts. In the Barraka Bar you can have a cold beer or cocktail while having the complimentary Wi-Fi, watching TV, playing table pool, or backgammon. The new Kite House is not a wild party house, but you are still only minutes away from the night action in the center of Lagos with all the pubs, clubs, restaurants, and street life.
The camp house has double rooms and dorm rooms consisting of four bedrooms. Right in front of the pool, the camp also owns bungalows with private entrance, lounge, bathrooms, and separate bedrooms. This is a perfect place for families and guests looking for privacy.
Kiteboarding combines elements of surfing, wakeboarding, and snowboarding with the flying skills of traction kites and paragliding. Learning kiteboarding at Algarve Watersport kite camp, you will be coached by multilingual, certified, and highly trained IKO and VDWS-instructors. They have modern teaching methods supported by boat assistance and video analysis for better learning progress upon request.
The kite equipment is renewed every year to ensure safety and comfort. The Cabrinha, Wainman, and ABoards kiteboards cover all levels from the absolute beginner to the advanced kiter. For advanced kiters with licensed, you will be offered full equipment rental and shuttle service to and from the kite lagoon.
You will be taught in small groups never exceeding more than four students per instructor. This allows for the perfect balance of teaching and practice time during your three-hour session. After you have successfully completed the kite surfing course, you will receive IKO certification which allows you to rent equipment at kite stations worldwide.
You will have your kitesurf lesson at the lagoon, located between Lagos and Alvor in Algarve. The big lagoon offers ideal conditions to learn and practice kiteboarding with perfectly flat and shallow water. The Algarve coastline is regulated by licenses which ensure that there are only sanctioned schools teaching there for minimal water traffic.
The lagoon which is situated at the end of Meia Praia beach always has a pleasant temperature. It is a safe place even with the off-shore wind because of the sand island in the middle of the lagoon. The shallow low tides will make this lagoon a perfect place to practice and learn to kitesurf.
The Nortada, the Portuguese north wind, gets accelerated by the surrounding landscape which allows the wind to speed up to 20 knots while other parts of the Algarve remained calm. Among many others, this is one of the reasons the PKRA (the kiteboarding professional tour) stops once a year. You will be taken to an island in the middle of the lagoon which offers steady wind for maximum perfect learning conditions.
During your stay in the camp, you will be served with seven breakfast and five dinner courses included in the package. You will start the day with a heavenly breakfast prepared by the kitchen fairy, Eli. The breakfast menus will vary and include juices, tea, coffees, whole wheat bread, rolls, baguettes, cheese, ham, jam, eggs, yoghurt, fruits, cereals, fresh milkshakes, and smoothies.
For dinner, the meals are well-traveled as the recipes and culinary ideas come from all over the world. The dinner has the night's theme like Italian, Asian, Latin American, German, Danish, Hungarian, and of course, Portuguese, to pamper you with delicious, nutritious, and healthy meals after a long day in the water.
On Wednesday and Saturday evening, the kitchen is closed so you can try the great restaurants in Lagos. There will be also special meals offered to vegetarians or allergic sufferer. Please let know Algarve Watersport beforehand upon booking.
You will be shown some of the great trails along the wild south coast overlooking the ocean or through the rural backcountry of the western Algarve. Bike mountain tours start in front of the Kite House for the trips from Lagos to Luz or Burgau. For a longer trip, you will have a drive to the west coast to enjoy a scenic ride while discovering the secret beaches and a stunning sunset.
For adrenaline junkies, you are also offered the tours to the highlands of the Monchique mountains. From the peak of the Foia, you will have an amazing view over Portimao, the Ria do Alvor, Lagos, and even the west coast as a whole.
Yoga and Pilates are great ways to keep your body, mind, and soul sharp until the next time you get in the water. Many of professional water women and men like Kelly Slater (nine times surf champion), Kristine Boese, (nine times kiteboarding champion), and Larid Hamilton (a big wave surf legend) have found yoga and Pilates to be one of the key preparation tools for their watersport careers.
By practicing yoga and Pilates, you can improve core strength, flexibility, agility, balance, lung capacity, concentration, and calmness in challenging wave situations. Yoga and Pilates also help to prevent your body from getting hurt and it shortens the recovering time between the sessions.
